  1. Obviously it is hard to say without actually feeling it, but... My friend ('06 Caymen) and myself ('04 C4S) both noticed how much our cars "track" the road. After talking to other p-car owners, it seems normal for a small amount of it.
  2. Do your speakers run to the head unit or a seperate amp? I just replaced the head unit on my 2004 996. My speakers ran to a separate amp (I did not have the bose upgrade.) So I had to run speaker wires to the trunk, to connect where the factory amplifier was. I'm just sure about your alarm comment/concern. I'm not really sure what the point of factory alarms are, so I didn't worry about losing its "functionality."
  3. I think there were two audio upgrades for the 911. The "performance" and "bose" upgrades. Performance added the amplifier and door subs. While the BOSE upgrade is new amplifiers and speakers. For the non-bose upgrade, there is only one amplifier and all of the speakers are 4ohms. I would not be surprised if the BOSE upgrade had more than one amplifier because I read that the speakers in that system are 2ohms. (At first I thought all stereos had 2ohm speakers, which left me wondering what I was going to do. But it turns out all six of mine are 4.) This is exactly why I started with an inexpensive head unit ($200). Now I have a more featured radio and a very good idea of how my car's audio is setup. I can now plan out the rest of my system. For what it is worth, if you aren't experienced in audio installs, this could be overwhelming. I can tell Porsche never intended for end-customers to upgrade their stereos, once they went to a MOST based system. Oh I forgot to add in my original post... I couldn't find anything in the center dash that resembled switched power. Does anyone know if the Telephone connector (at the bottom of the console, kind of hidden) have a switched power?
  4. No Amp yet. The one that came in the car is pretty worthless. Seems like the only reason it was done in the first place was to drive the door speakers. (The CDR23 can drive front/rear on its own, but isn't.) I still haven't decided what setup I want to use. I might just get a 4-channel to drive subs and mid-range speakers in the door, leaving the head unit to drive front and rear. Or I could do two amps and keep the head unit from doing any of the amp work.
  5. Good tip. Maybe I'll just do the subs first and see how the sound goes. I'm already spending more than I wanted on an audio upgrade. I still haven't decided what to do with those. They aren't hooked up now and I really don't miss them. I might buy speakers for the doors and wait until I have to take one of them apart before I swap them out. (Until I get an amp, it won't matter anyway.)
  6. My car did not have the BOSE audio upgrade, but it did have a separate amplifier. With a little bit of dremel-usage, I was able to get a 1 DIN (Blaupunkt) head unit to fit in place of the CDR23. I ripped out the stock amplifier and ran speaker wires from the new head unit to the old speaker connections. I would love to run new wires to all of the speakers, but I don't see myself ever going that far. This particular unit supports bluetooth and iPod audio in. iPod cable runs up into the console area. The phone Microphone was run under the dash, up the A-Piller, and onto the visor. (Took this chance to pull out the antenna wire from the wire bundle, to get a little bit more range on my keyless system.) The power running to the radio caused pretty bad alternator noise, so I had to install a power filter. Now that I did that, I'm happy with the head unit. The next stage I will replace all of the speakers. Then I'll install a sub box (on the back deck) and trun all of the speakers through an external amplifier. Finally, I'm going to replace the head unit again with a in-dash NAV. Fun times. Makes me wish I bought a '02. Oh, I almost forgot. I went to reposition myself and pushed a little too hard on the glove box. I snapped the clips to the support bars, so now my box is busted. Live and Learn.
  7. Can anyone help me with the coat hanger? Does it just pull off? Edit: Nevermind. I just wasn't pulling on the pillar/cover with enough force.
  8. It is all in my signature, so that I don't have to remember in my posts. Thanks for the idea. I immediately remembered seeing it there. Now I just have to figure out how to run the wires.
  9. Since I didn't have the BOSE option, I was hoping to pull the head unit out and having speakers connected directly to it. This doesn't look to be the case. I am working under the assumption that there must be some kind of amplifier connected via MOST which provides audio the speakers. After tearing apart the dash, I'm not seeing one nor am I able to easily follow the fiber optic cable. Can someone point me in the right direction?
  10. While not as good as other tools, an OBD reader can give you some clue. Just stop by your local AutoZone and borrow theirs to read the code(s). (Again, this is pretty minimal, but it would at least give you a clue to what turned on the CEL.)
  11. Two days ago I was driving through a parking lot when my CEL came on. I stopped by an AutoZone and checked the OBD error codes. The only one I got was P0507: Idle Control System, RPM High. After clearing the code it has not come back. The engine seems to idle fine. 2-3 weeks ago I changed the oil and the spark plugs. 1 week ago I changed the air filter and cleaned the throttle body. I've driven the car daily since. My first thought was I might have damaged the throttle body. Anything in particular I should be watching for?
  12. So normal that it has only ever happened once? When you get in your p-car and just insert your key, your radio turns on?
  13. This is a weird behavior I saw today. I have a '04 C4S with the Stock CDR-23 (no Bose). I stopped at a corner store to grab a drink. When I got out of the car I know the radio was off. I know this because I'm currently using a FM modulator to listen to my iPhone. So when I disconnect, I hear static until the radio shuts off. When I got back into the car and put my key in, the radio turned on. This was before I turned the ignition... Anyone else ever see this behavior? I'm chalking it up as some kind of bug (or maybe I did ever so slightly turn the ignition). Just kind of weird. Not use to something turning on unexpectantly... just turning off ;)
  14. I thought I had a burned out bulb. Turns out, when I took the bulb out, one of the electrical tabs had broke. So I need to replace the entire socket assembly. Is it possible to replace a single light socket on the tail lights, or do they all need to be replaced? It looks like all of the light sockets on connected together and can be replaced on their own part. The reflector assembly is part #996.631.417.00. While all of the sockets appear to be #996.631.447.00. I am hoping I can just order 447.00 and replace the light assemblies. Does this sound right?
  15. Talk to enough dealers and eventually you will find out that putting gas in your car voids your warranty.
  16. Sorry to hear about your trouble. But your comment here kind of puzzled me. If you don't keep your receipts, then how would you prove that you have done the required maintenance (while in the warranty period)?
  17. Yes, it is on the left for racing. So you can start the car while putting it into gear. ... but I'm sure many left handed people feel the same as you... ;)
  18. Before I disconnect my battery, is there some way for me to determine my radio code?
  19. In looking over the service records, I think this is the original battery. So it is starting its 5th year of life. I'm not sure why it didn't occur to me sooner, but at least I think I know what is causing the smell... Thanks guys.
  20. I've noticed a pretty distinct sulfur smell when I open up the front boot of the car ('04 996 C4S). I'm not really sure what is causing the smell. Is it the battery? Thanks in advance for any ideas.
  21. How often or when should the oil be changed on a manual transmission? Thanks!
