  1. am getting ready to do another rms and wondered if I should use a different seal and tool from prior jobs? this is a 00 996 not gt3. thanks...should the IMS bearing be replaced always as a matter of caution on a 40K engine?
  2. This car is odd in that temp rises to about 195F and tends to stay there. I've checked with PIWIS and fans can be operated through the tester-low and high, yet the fans do not kick in over 180 degrees. the ECU sends the signal to the fan relays so I'm a bit confused. Coolant level is ok and engine performs fine. Temp is accurate according to PIWIS. Cleaned radiators of debris also
  3. WOWEY WOW...I thought I was the "chosen one" when it comes to these types of problems....I am following this to the end...one of the more challenging ones in a long time. PLEASE allow me to feel your pain! You did not mention if the car was tested by piwis when visiting the dealer and what it detailed. were behind u on this-good hunting-Mark the ***** is that no one on earth has had this problem!!

  5. I applaud this thread for it's lack of discussion respecting HP GAINS! As a shop owner, I'm so disgusted with that BS! I can understand and support an alternative sound theme though. Many of the current "muffler merchants' (those built in US) are crafted of craptanium also. Today's Porsche has real quality incorporated into their exhaust parts. havefundriveporschetakechances-Mark

  9. I've degregulated the seat belt light by bypassing the plug....ANYONE know how to bypass the airbag light or jump the plug under the seats? thanks in advance

  11. according to factory info, changed both the cam timing hydraulic unit and the com position sensor on bank 2 -4-6...all to no avail. download reveals same problem immediately after startup. anyone have this code problem?? Car runs fine. thanks BTW 03 996 tip
  12. Why are there so many different horsepower specs with cars that are all supposed to have the same engine? With the later cars, we find it very important to have a pre-sale inspection performed. Many people (buyers, mechanics) overlook seamingly minor issues that may result in costly repairs...get it checked carefully...best few bucks you will ever spend on your new baby! There's a million stories that come with these cars. Mark My Two Cents.
  13. I guess this is reflected in the prices of the stage 1/2 vs 4/5 kits available today.... Even though I have a Porsche service business, ECU programming and my opinions tend to put a burr in peoples saddles. I mean no harm, just reality. The Turbo has always benefitted with a "small" increase in manifold pressure due to the way the factory is conservative with OEM pressures. The factory runs their tests VERY hard prior to introducing a new model. A "typical" increase of 2-3 lbs makes a very nice improvement. Many of our clients run hard at the track, where ambient temps can soar....this few pounds has not caused typical detonation problems, especially with higher octane fuel. The normally aspirated engines have a very good program(s) built in. I've seen minor improvements on engine dyno's, yet on the track or street the improvements are very marginal. ANY time you increase boost, there will be a noticeable improvement. This has been the typical case for decades on the Turbo. More aggressive manifold pressures MAY be tolerated in short bursts with a cold intercooler on the street, NOT on the track under strenuous driving conditions. We have changed many P/C sets and heads on 996 Turbo's due to that particular set of circumstances. My biggest "peeve" with the 996 Turbo is the lack of limited slip and the continuous brake application necessary with PSM under rigorous driving. With all the money people spend on upgrades, why they don't get a GT2 is amazing. NOT to mention, trying to sell it after all those mods. Mark

  16. The use of "higher" octane fuel in performance environments have been persistantly discussed by my clients as well as peers....with the ultimate, undeniable/PRACTICAL conclusion THAT.......use the "pump" premium, it's more than capable of propelling you to track euphoria!
  17. This type of subject, unfortunately, come up on topic all too often. The simple reality of the Porsche line is that they are already an engineered, HIGH PERFORMANCE machine....out of the box. Almost to the total aftermarket suppliers, they offer products that do NOT INCREASE true performance from these ENGINEERED machines. Deception in the advertising and inferior manufacturing processes often lead to a car that has become a pariah....NO ONE wants to buy it anymore. Funny, when we logically think of the REAL, bonified engineers who put science and technology into each and every part of a Porsche 911?....well, how can we believe that some of the aftermarked "wizards" can beat the factory at the factory's game! PLEASE.....They border insults in the ads in eurotrash mags!. Headers? What do you think you have to begin with? Stack the two headers together, look, think! Which header will stand up longer, which header is "fitted" to the engine management better? The aftermarket should be smacked! the buyer of this crap should be smacked for being so stupid! Do you homework and you will conclude what thousands of others do, without throwing your hard earned cash in the garbage. Sorry, I do this once in a long while, the educating thing...REALLY pisses of the guys that make this junk:-) AND. let's NOT talk about AIR FILTERS!#$%^$^$% havefuntakechancesdriveporsche
  18. This problem is why I reached out. It seems unusual. Client bought car in Fla then drove it up North. obviously on highway it's ok. But, with fan speeds not working car overheated as they slowed down in traffic. Tester cannot get speed one or two to work. engine fan works. fuses are ok. WAS hoping someone heard of this problem. ****, one day I'll get a break on one of these diagnostic problems, without doing the work myself:-) thanks for helping anyway-Mark
  19. I would first check the relays and pin out the connectors to the fans, making sure you have good ground and batt supply. If the relays are both not working then you need a wire diagram to analyze the circuit and determine if ineed the dme is the problem. Dme is very expensive so you must be sure of your diagnosis.   22. Cannot order a US car with Sunroof Delete!!! Means no factory roll bar either....dumb cement heads screw it up again, just like the RS which really is a BS deal, Oh I forgot....you get the single mass flywheel and pretty wheels!

  24. Hi guys there seems to be a question on what is the proper size and offset in 18" and what size slicks to run with that wheel configuration for track events-ANY one have similar setup? We'd appreciate input very much. thanks Mark
  25. Ian talks the talk: I walk the walk-we both agree that HP improvements is expecting the wind to pick up the sails...all smoke and mirrors. Save the dough, blow the ride for a better one! Don't be a schmuck like a lot of guys do on that "other" site. How the hell does some bumf==k in bumf==k idonknowwhereville sit back a say he can beat the factory at their own game. Same thing said for all that additive crap we see on the idiotbox that does wonders(****) for the longevitiy and performance. If this garbage was so spectacular the OEM's would be using it, or buying the guy out!. SOOO SICK of the bull**** artists out there. Todays Porsche engine cannot see any appreciating performance gains from bolt on ****, period. Unfortunately, it's what I do too!-M BTW- a product called Ventil Sauber does help clean the intake/fuel stream, as well as the valves. I say this to validate that I do suggest some things- Forget aftermarket trash for the 996 Carrera. You'll only waste fortunes getting very little power for a lot of outlay and make the car impossible to sell - Porsche buyers seem to be particularly anal about original spec. etc. In reality there is nowhere to go with this engine apart from supercharging which is very expensive. Intake kits simply don't work. Mufflers give 2-3 BHP at best - the rest is lies. Headers, 200-Cell cats and mufflers with a re-map will give you 15 BHP absolute max. Porsche's own power kit requires gas-flowed heads, headers and intake plenums plus much more aggressive cams and mapping just for 25 more BHP. Even then the performance of the cars when measured is almost no different - go figure! Every reputable tuner will tell you there is no real extra power to be had from the M96 engine. One thing it does like however is very high octane gas. Put 99-100 RON in the tank and reset your DME. You'll be surprised. By far the better route would be to sell the car and put the hard-earned towards a Turbo. Even stock, a Turbo has way more performance than you could ever realisitcally and reliably achieve from tweaking a Carrera. And of course, the Turbo CAN be tweaked enormously for modest outlay by virtue of being able to increase the boost pressure. Ian W
