  1. On the softtop, majority of the squeek and rattle are due to warped flocking panel (plastic front panel between headliner and canvass), loose braces in rear, as well as lubrication around header, window sills. All the rattles can be removed but it will take sometime to fix each one by one. Until all noises are fixed, it'll seem like rattles come one by one when in fact all noises are masked by the louder one. A few trips to the dealer or persistent fixing usually does the job. Start with the lubes mentioned. If not fixed, hold the braces in rear to see if noises are caused there. If the noise is from the header despite lube, suspect your flocking panel is warped (esp if it's parked outdoors).
  2. if the sides of the engine have oil, it's probly cam seals. if it's between engine and tranny in center of engine, it's probly rms. if it's just from drain plug, tighten it may help. you could just take it to the dealer for a check and also get a car wash too!
  3. Spark plugs are difficult to get to. You'll also want to change air filter (20min), cabin filter (5min), flush brake fluid every 3 yrs, inspect brake/suspension/steering. All said and done, you're probly looking at $200-250 of parts and a day of garage time. It should be around $1k. Call around different shops (including independent). Or, just DIY.
  4. Ever consider a 996? Many cabs have hardtop or you can get a a coupe. 986S is a nice car too. With snow tires, PSM is nice but not mandatory. Litronic is great. If you do get one without a warranty, make sure the dealer fixes any rattle or oil leak before you buy it. Low mileage cars are prone to have little things that add up to $$$ which weren't addressed.
  5. From a new buyer perspective, he will want to know why an RMS caused new engine replacement. No matter what you say, he will think there is something terminally wrong with the car to warrant an engine replacement. RMS history is bad enough. Engine replacement is worse. Are you getting a brand new engine or one that is remanufactured? If not new, I'd not replace it.
  6. I was told by dealer that the 2 yr warranty only applies if the repair is paid out of pocket. If under warranty, there is no coverage once your warrranty expires. Your best bet is to contact the dealer who did the fix originally. If they can fix it for you, take the car there even if it's far. Send them pictures if needed to get it done. Maybe they can settle the fix cost at a local dealer but that's a long shot. Also get estimate from local upholstery shops that are used by dealers. Bottom line, don't wait to fix this.
  7. Like ar38070 said: with key in, radio/fan/headlight and other components stay on and will drain it. If radio/fan/headlight was off, your battery should sustain a night. If that's the case, your battery may be weak. Charge it fully and if the battery is 4-5 yrs old, you may want to replace it if this happens again.
  8. It mounts in the front trunk. Given that your 987 has MOST, you'll need to have the dealer program it to turn it on after you hook up the fibre optic cable. If you are doing this yourself, you might as well have the dealer do it since you'll get them involved to activate it anyways. They'll probly charge you an hour of labor.
  9. $600 is expensive? Sounds like a good price to me. Make sure the installer realigns the mechanism and has a warranty for at least 1 yr.
  10. Sorry to hear about your experience. If there is another dealer, try another. I have found nothing but excellent service from my dealers. Perhaps have 5-6 in the 50mi radius is their motivation to be great. Balancing is easy. Rattle can be fixed. Certified cars aren't new by far. You are basically buying a warranty and an inspection (not extensive in any CPO program regardless of car make) Any P dealer can honor your ext warranty from Porsche. Don't let one bad shop ruin your ownership experience.
  11. Congrats! Looks like a flip up Pioneer or Kenwood. What are prices like in Japan for a GT3 or plain 996? That flatbed looks pretty amazingly modern and clean. I'd love to have one of those to go along with the car.
  12. If it were exhaust, wouldn't the noise go away when the car is warm since metal expand the parts that are loose and minimize rattling? This is the long shot but I assume you don't have plates yet. If you do, remove it and the bracket to see if that's causing it.
  13. It could be the flocking panel which is the plastic under the canvas on the front of the roof. The mechanism could need lubrication also and a top adjustment may be needed. The car has 6000 mi or km? Do you park it under the sun? Excess heat can cause flocking panel to warp and make noises. Go to another dealer if there is one.
  14. Yes, wheel barrel is painted. I use a scouring pad and scrub lightly with water. Don't do it often and scrub hard or else the clear coat will peel. Wheel cleaner is good. If you really can't get it 100% clean, leave it. It'll get coated in a hundred miles anyway.
  15. I would think a spare can handle more than a few hundred miles. Unless the tire is worn, I wouldn't replace it just yet. 200 isn't like 20k miles on performance tire. A new tire could probly be ordered by a tire shop.
  16. I don't think it's normal. If you manually select first gear, it will stay there until the car starts to move. It's not going to go back to 2nd after a few second. It'll go to auto mode after a few second but stay in first. Your problem may not be tranny computer. It could be the seals inside not swelling and holding the gear. If you care to try, put in a bottle of tranmission conditioner sold at local auto parts store. Look for a bottle that conditions and swells the seal. It won't hurt your tranny and may work well. I've had good luck with a non-P car autobox that I almost gave up to get rebuilt. Basically, the gear wouldn't hold in gear in my case.
  17. nice work. i wonder how your system will compare to a bose one.
  18. rector is a rip off. sunset rules. carlsen an stevens creek are decent
  19. 1. Try another station 2. Add a few gallons using a gas can
  20. My 02 cab AC control went dark today and didn't respond when button are pressed. No air and no AC when the control went dark. Any cause of this? After restarting the car, the control came back on and everything works fine. Is this a random issue that I shouldn't worry about? I am still under warranty for antoher 2 months so should I bring it in?
  21. If it's just paint water, I'd suspect your top or window seals. Did it rain recently? Did you park w top down in garage or underground parking garage? Was car washed? You should determine source of leak by spraying water onto the car of different angles and areas while someon is in the car. This can give you an idea before you take it to the dealer. Water damage can be severe. I'd get an appt w dealer asap. They should determine the source of leak and dry interior completely to avoid damage to carpet, electrnical switches and odor. I'd try to locat source of leak myself also.
  22. why are you worried about it since the dent removal guys will do it? they shoudl know how to do it. if not, i'd have any dent removal place do it.
  23. pcm1 has tape deck and uses 8 cd's instead of 2 cd's pcm2 is for 03+ which uses MOST fiber optic and is not compatible w 99-02. it is still a cumberson unit Eclipse has an in dash unit that has all the dvd drives, gps antennae, cd drive all in one HU. It's the easiest to install but it still takes 4 hr min. If you like the in dash display (as opposed to flip out screen), consider this one. You get DVD nav, dvd movie playback, touchscreen, split screen nav mode. It's the same system in a Lexus. You can also add bluetooth if so desired. The unit, when done, will be around 2500 installed and will be better than any german nav out there.
  24. navtec doesnt supply new maps for pcm1 so adding one is a waste of money. installation isn't plug n play as the gps wiring and antennae is time consuming. boe wasn't offere in 01 only 02. better off w aftermarket gps from kenwood, pioneer or eclipe. they have touchscreen
  25. 4 hr of labor is excessive. I'd say he'll spend 2 hrs at most. I think he's screwing you!
