  1. Nice write up. I guess mine is pink since it's an 02.
  2. I doubt you can get 50+ hp from intake, chip flash, exhaust alone. These mods will probly fit under your budget. Most of the mods do not actually add much HP despite of the claims made by tuners. I'd keep it stock or go with a SC. You may also consider mods like a short shifter kit which makes the car drive nicer but don't add power. For a daily driver, I would keep it stock unless you are unhappy with the performance and willing to deal with less reliability.
  3. It could be either the bulb, bulb socket. The headlight assembly can be accessed through the front trunk liner. You can swap bulbs to see if that fixes it. Clean the contact with a contact cleaner while you've got it taken apart too. I doubt if it's the switch but that's very prone to failture as well. Since parking light comes on when you have the headlights on and you are not having headlight issues, I'd think the switch is OK. It's easy to take apart the switch I think so that's another area to check.
  4. Is the top up or down? Try folding the mirror, open & close the top. Often the door not sealing tightly causes whistle.
  5. PB blaster is a lube similar to wd40. You can get it in a spray can in auto supply or home supply stores. You probly don't want to soak it and then drive the car since the lube will be burnt off unless the shop is within a mile from your house. If you aren't comfortable in doing it, leave the job to the exhaust guy. He'll spray it I'm sure. Make sure you take it to a reputable shop though
  6. soak the bolts over night with PB blaster or WD 40 to ease bolt removal. if bolt feel stock, turn the bolt in tighten direction and then back and force a few times to loosen up. then soak w more lube. it's DIY but you should work on it with some care and not just brute force alone.
  7. If your car is dirty, there is no substitute for a good car wash. If it's merely dusty from stitting in garage and occasional sunday drives, you can dust it or use a detail spray to wipe off spots like finger prints. This can be done is your car is garage kept and never sees much rain. Using a wet towel leaves water mark sometimes and if you really have dirt to wipe off, you can scratch the paint. As for disc brake getting wet, I don't think that is a concern. Surface rust on disc brake comes off after a couple of stops.
  8. RMS is about 3-4 hr job tops. My dealer removed my engine for other oil inspection and was done in 2-3 days total.
  9. Tiptronic is pretty advanced in its gear selection and actually holds gears when pushed hard. I'd go with a tip if you don't want stick. DSG is avail on S3 as well. It'll be a jerkier ride similar to SMG. SMG is pretty jerky compared to an auto.
  10. Didn't know you are in HK. My brother is there. I think SLK 350 is a fine car. Offers great safety, pretty powerful engine, nice options / interior. If I were you, I would not trade for a 987 base. I would trade for a 996 or 987S or a Cayman. 987 base is really not a very fast car especially w tiptronic. If you trade, you'll lose money so it has to be a step up. SLK will be cheaper to maintain as well. The folding hardtop is real nice compared a soft top. RE: the key, I doubt it's a high priority for Porsche. It's really not a feature typical Porsche buyer cares about. On options, you can refer to my previous reply to your other tread.
  11. halogen is fine but won't light up as well as xenon. beside, i love the color of xenon. do yourself a fav and go to porsche.com to configure the car. porsche has very few standard equipment. anyone used to MB will be surprised to find a porsche that doesn't have dimming mirrors, rain sensors, elect seats. however, porsche does offer much more option possibilities such as deviating stiching and full leather dash/panel that MB doesn't. Money of options is another matter.
  12. heated seats, xenon are very costly to retrofit and pretty much bare minimum. consider short shifter also. if you like your exhaust loud, order PSE (nice to have since it offers no add'l power). you may consider electric adjustable seats as they offer lumbar and bolster support. full leather seats are pretty much a waste of money as only the seat back is vinyl which is unseen anyway. if you are getting full leather interior covering door panels and dash, then you are looking at $$ but will actually see a difference.
  13. You should do a few cycles of top down/up to find out what cause the tear before fixing it. Is it perfectly straight? Is this possibly an act of vandalism? If so, perhaps your insurance should cover it (if you have a low deductible). I'd agree to replace the top since stitching or patching will leave a mark and possible compromise waterproofing of top. Go with a GAHH top w back glass. Many are very satisfied with them.
  14. Spin on type oil filter (those that are in a metal casing) typically offer an oil drain back valve if the filter is open downward. This prevents the oil from the filter to flow back into the engine block. Porsche uses cartridge oil filter (only paper element). Our filters are do not open downward and are not spin on type. As for your noise, I don't think you have much to worry about as long as the engine noise is not an exhaust rattle or leak, belt squeek. Check your oil level on a flat surface before starting once a week or two.
  15. coupe or cab? Cab's headliner is easy to remove and braces as well as plastic panel in the front of the soft top often cause rattle.
  16. I think he has a cab given what he said. Your window regulator maybe old. Try some lube around the cab frame that meets the glass. I had my window regulator replaced and most of the noise stopped.
  17. 01 has 3.4L 02 has 3.6L, newer interior material, bose option, throatier exhaust (stock vs stock), different fenders, turbo headlights, improve aerodynamics. Exhaust is 500-1k depending what you get. It's an easy swap unless you get PSE with electronics wired. Wheels are easy swap too. Both are easily upgradeable for a few grand. However, the engine, body style, interior will be too expansive to update. 02+ are holding on their value fairly well while 99-01 prices have fallen greatly. I think warranty expiring combine with the 02+ improvements are the reasons. With 02 coming off of warranty soon, it would be interesting to see if 02 prices start to dip under $50k.
  18. For 1400, just get some new seats. You can often find a set of new ones for that price on ebay. If you are not set on sport seats, the base seats are pretty easy to find. The only thing is trying to find ones that are near new. Many upgrade base seats. If you will get new ones, the seat warmer is good but you'll need to wire those. If your car didn't come with seat warners, you'll have to add separate wiring instead of using stock harness. The 986 DIY link above gives you an idea of the job. Not a bad time to upgrade but it's a little involved. Upholstry shops can be a hit or miss. Many are sketchy even those that dealer refer to. Be sure you know how he will do the job and judge if that really meets your expectation. Talk to a few shops.
  19. Try changing the bulb first and clean the light socket with contact cleaner. If no luck, measure the voltage at the socket line leading to the socket.
  20. Get an Eclipse or Kenwood one w touch screen. The only downside is you'll have to re-wire your audio since 03+ has MOST. You'll be able to get new map updates. I doubt if Navtech will support PCM2 for long.
  21. You can pick up a glass repair kit at auto parts store for $10. With 20 min, you can fill the bulleye with the resin. Do this soon before the crack expands!!! If you want to have someone do it, take it to an auto glass shop. They'll be happy to do it for you for an extra fee.
  22. The part comes in black from dealer. I don't think Porsche makes one that is CF. You may find one aftermarket. You can always have it painted black.
  23. TSB = technical service bulletin Flocking panel is a plastic panel at the front most part of the soft top. You notice the front part of the soft top is solid, w a panel under the canvass. That's the flocking panel. It can warp due to heat when parked outside and cause lots of noise with the headers.
