  1. My friend Wes has two fans blowing down on the engine, it helps with engine temps on the race track. If you have a modified Boxster it'll help on the street too, he has them blowing right on the intake plenums.
  2. I graduated to PCA Yellow Group this weekend! My first Driver's Education event was this January 3rd, I went from Green to Blue the first day. I've been in Blue until this past weekend, now I'm in Yellow Group, which is solo for those who don't know. At Sebring I can do 2:45 to 2:46 all day consistently, that's with a bone stock suspension and street tires, plus my car has an open differential. It's a complete blast. I'm going to trade my car in for a Carrera soon, an '04 that I'm going to upgrade a little bit. Anyway, if you guys don't participate in PCA DE events, you should, because it's so much fun, and you use the cars as they were actually designed. Tom
  3. I just had my steering wheel clock spring replaced under warranty, mine didn't squeak though, it made a clicking sound in turns. You might want to check yours out or have it checked.
  4. It's a great car and more reliable than most. The problem areas I've experienced so far are the top mechanism, a click in the steering and the trunk lid release button popping off and disappearing. My car is under warranty but I bet the top and steering fixes would be expensive. If reliability or gas mileage were the primary criteria you probably would've purchased a Honda Accord with a four cylinder, but you sound like you want a sports car. If you're considering the Boxster as a sports car, or even a sports car that also needs to be a daily driver, you couldn't have picked a better car to learn to drive quickly with. The Boxster's handling is terrific, it's pretty much vice free, and while it won't beat a Corvette in a pure acceleration contest, a Boxster will out accelerate most cars. If you start bringing your car to the track, and I'm in the camp of thought that all Porsche should be, you're progressively going to become a quicker driver and you'll want brake upgrades. I have the 355mm Brembos, they're awesome. If I were going to do it all over again I'd probably upgrade at least the front brakes first, then start doing engine mods, the stock brakes on both the 2.7 and 3.2 are OK for street use but if you track the car they really aren't enough. Anyway, don't analyze it too much or you won't buy one. Just buy the newest one you can afford and if possible, get it with a warranty. Ciao!
  5. FVD has a package with the sport clutch and sport pressure plate as well as an aluminum flywheel for $975 for Boxster or $1195 for Boxster S. I have one in my car, it helps with acceleration, it lets the engine rev up quicker. www.fvd-usa.com
  6. Cargraphic are good. I have the 200 cell versions of their cats and their headers. I'm told the 100 cell ones wear out and/or cause problems. I've never thrown a CEL with my 200 cell cats. Even though I have a Boxster and you have a 996, I think it's still a good recommendation, they make quality stuff. Along with the EVO intake and Powerchip, it helps me make 264.5 hp. I like Powerchip because you can send them your dyno pulls and they'll make the necessary changes to the spark and fuel maps. Oh yeah, mine is a 2002 Boxster 2.7, not bad for a car that's supposed to make 217 hp.
  7. I'm going to install a Rev-Lite in my Boxster. I like these better than the single LED shift lights. http://www.rev-lite.com/rev.html While not completely necessary to drive fast, I'm still curious to see what it does in terms of being aware of what the engine is doing. I asked my mechanic this weekend if it would be easy to put in, he was like yeah, no problem. (We were both driving at Sebring this weekend at a PCA event) Tom
  8. The stock brake suck for track use. I ran into lots of fade at Sebring, specifically coming out of turn 6 and into turn 7 (the hairpin). I installed 14" Brembos and I no longer have any brake fade.
  9. $1250 for a new flywheel is too much, my billet aluminum flywheel (12 lbs) and Sachs sports clutch were $950. It doesn't add horsepower but it does let the power spin the wheels more instead of absorbing the energy to make the engine seem smoother. The engine revs more eagerly and acceleration is better. The flipside is when at idle at a streetlight, it throbs slightly more, but, I think most people would think, hey, it's a sports car anyway.
  10. Craig, I have Cargraphic headers. They were installed by my dealer. I guess the power steering hose came loose from it's fastener and touched. While I was sweeping through turn 6, my steering felt stiff and then I saw smoke. It all happened so fast, I don't recall if I heard the scraping first or felt the steering get firmer first. Either way, the parts are already ordered and it'll be repaired in a day or two. This weekend I'm heading back to Sebring, then Moroso the week after, then back to Sebring, and then an auto-x. It's a fun car, but Sebring is tough on cars, sometimes things happen. Tom
  11. When I was at Sebring on Jan 3rd, a guy with a Boxster had a boil over, he mixed another coolant with Porsche coolant. I didn't think it would make much of a difference and neither did he. I thought that Porsche coolant would be the same as any other just with a Porsche label on it, but apparently there are slight differences. What Bill said will work, both Havoline and Chevron make good stuff, and they say it meets the performance requirements, it should work fine. As far as the guy at Sebring that had the boil over, he flushed and replaced all the coolant with the Porsche stuff. I think if you flush all the coolant out and replace it with the Havoline or Chevron stuff that Bill recommends you'll be fine, but it's probably not a good idea to mix any two coolant brands together, although for street only driving it probably doesn't matter.   12. You guys should try it with an aluminum flywheel and sport clutch! It's really not as bad as people say it is, but you can can hear some judder under some situations. The stock dual mass flywheel is pretty heavy and there shouldn't be much shudder at all. You may notice some on really hilly areas, since you are from Alabama, you probably have a few of those up there.

  14. I saw the car up on the lift today, the O2 sensor wire might be burned a little but it was wrapped in foil, it might not even need replacing. The power steering line touched the header and it sprung a leak, it'll definately need replacing, then the rear plastic tray will need replacing. Tool Pants has some really nice pictures of the area, in the top picture, the area that got burned on my car would be in the upper right hand area. Tool Pants: my 2002 still has plastic fasteners in some of the places. Everyone: check that your power steering line is securely fastened so it can't touch the exhaust manifold. Best Regards, Tom There are several lines routed in that area. Power steering fluid is apparently very flammable. What you guys can gain from this whole thing is to make sure that your power steering line is secured to make sure it doesn't touch the exhaust manifold. Triple check it. If I wasn't at a track and on the highway, my little 2 lb fire bottle probably wouldn't have saved the car. They used three or four full sized fire bottles to put it out.
  15. The aerodynamic undertray comes in three pieces on each side of the car, at least that's how it looked when I was at the track and the car was on a jack. I will get a better look at it tomorrow and supply some pictures. I think the fasteners were defective, the fasteners seemed to be plastic, they really should be metal. Maybe there is a design change with newer models, mine is a 2002. I'm glad I was at a track when it happened, my little 2 lb bottle wouldn't have been enough to stop the fire. Tom
  16. I wasn't racing, it was a driving school. I don't know how the piece came loose, I think it must have been defective. Porsche paid to have my car towed back to my dealer, I'll know more Monday. Meanwhile they gave me another Boxster as a loaner.
  17. I was driving today at Sebring, through turn 6, and my Boxster caught on fire! The third plastic undertray came loose and scraped the pavement and ignited, then it lit all the oil and/or rubber that was under there and I had a bit of a scare. I immediately pulled next to the flagman at turn 7 and they put out the fire. I won't know the extent of the damage until Monday, and nobody was hurt.
  18. I forget how to do the mirrors but the rain sensor is part # 996.612.981.00, you mount it up by the rear view mirror and snake the wiring down to the fuse box. I believe the two options came together as one order code from the factory.

The option code for it is X68. I guess I take warm weather for granted here in Florida, I've only driven three times with the top up, maybe four. Last year I drove all the way from Florida to New Jersey with the top down, it's definately a fun car.
  20. Oh yeah! I keep forgetting about those actually. I see you have the short-shift, I swear it's one of the best upgrades for the car. It's got such a more positive feel to it, It's handy for both street and track. I will throw on a set of the Euro clear side markers, probably this week.
  21. Now what you need are a set of 355mm Brembos. Here you can see mine peeking out from underneath my Sport Technos. They barely fit, the wheel weights would hit if they weren't the slim versions. I had bad brake fade at Sebring with the stock brakes (even with Super Blue and racing pads), they pretty much suck for anything other than street.
  22. Sounds like the exhaust manifold gasket either came loose or blew out on one of the exhaust points.

If your dealer doesn't know anyone, you can ask mine.
