  1. The early Boxsters all had a fixed pulley. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...0&hl=pulley Are you replacing the alternator?
  2. Boxster owners have tried it and were not able to get the tube inside the engine. Have no info on a 996.
  3. I have only worked on one new style transmission. I was able to pull the inner drive cable (square end) out of the worm gear with my fingers. On the old style you need tools to pull the inner cable out of th drive gear. If you want to "glue" the cable so it will not accidently pull out you can clean everything with brake cleaner and use loctite.
  4. Here is a picture from Popolou on Boxa.net of the plastic key. All that should be in there is the "pill" and I don't think water can bother it.
  5. If you see the temp display then the OBC is on and nothing more needs to be done, and it should work if wired correctly. How did you make the wiring harness? How are the switches wired? What numbered slots on the instrument cluster connector are you using?

  8. In my case the seals in the steering rack are leaking, so I have to top up very few months. This has been going on for years, until I get around to replacing the rack. But only one time have I seen fluid on my garage floor. The fluid leaks into the boots, and I guess the fluid comes out of the boots when I'm driving. Take a front tire off then remove the small clamp from the boot to see if thre is fluid inside the boot.
  9. They are called well nuts. A hardware may not have metric ones. I have only seen SAE at local hardware stores. Porsche part number is 999 500 078 00. The bolt is 900 378 179 09.
  10. The noise can be from the motor mount. More so since it is a common problem and you have a lot of miles. A local one man independent shop replaced 3 of them in a short period of time, to give you an idea of how common it is.
  11. The only thing I see it PET is a "modification kit seal brake booster" with a part number of 000 043 204 66. This kit is also mentioned in one of the TSBs. If you have a car made prior to September 13, 1999 this is the kit you need when installing the new style booster. This is also the TSB that says if you have a model year 1997 you also need to replace the brake pedal.

  13. I have seen the "new" regular 15-50 in Walmart - the first picture. Have not looked for it at auto parts places because I started to use the 15W-50 EP (gold cap) when the original 15W-50 (red cap) was discontinued.
  14. That changer is actually made by Sony with Becker electronics. You can use Sony magazine, rather than buying it as a repackaged Becker or Porsche.
  15. You need to see if water in the booster is the problem. I do not have a way to cross reference Porsche to VAG parts. But if you go here and look up the booster it says it is also for an Audi A4/A6 and VW Passat, and has the years for those vehicles. http://www.partsamerica.com/

  17. On ebay I was watching the system from DSP Motorsports. Is that where you got it?
  18. Don't know of any reason you cannot use this. It comes back as a coupe, also used on a 2002 996. One of the local owners,Ray, has the same amp but has not put it in yet. That one should have a white connector.
  19. The oval trim just pulls out. If the cluster is covered with leather then you have to pull harder. A Boxster does not have this trim. For the ground wire I use a ring terminal 1/4" size.
  20. New style is on the left and old style on the right. The old style has a simple 0-ring seal. The new style has a better seal. The seal is part of the flange, so that is why you have to replace the flange if you have a leak from that area. You can also see the blue bolts on the left. Second picture shows where the flange goes on the back of the engine. This is a 1999 996 and it had the old style. Last is my 1997. There was a film of oil on the back of the engine. Looks black because dirt sticks to the oil. You really can't determine the source. Is it the seal, bolts, or flange? That is why it is somewhat standard procedure to update all the parts on th older cars. My car was like this when Marvin called and I went over to check it out. In 9 years of ownership I never saw a drop of oil on the ground. So mine was not a leaker like others you read about. I was going to leave it alone but since I had 67,000 miles and Marvin was in there.... I also had seepage on the cam covers, which is common. But they were left alone. Oil pump house is another source for leaks, but mine was ok.
