  1. I have a 99 C2, never had to add oil between changes, which is 4-6 months depending on number of track events. I use the Mobil 1 0-40 October-April, Castrol Syntec 5-50 rest of year. A liter every fill up is simply wrong, something must be missing and the oil is going somewhere... Just my view.
  2. Okay papito, here is my impression of Eibach springs pro-kit after 8 hours on track, and about 170 miles of good old fun. The car tracks signifcantly better, can take corners at higher speeds with much less leaning. Also seemed a lot less scarier going flat out on the straights, felt more planted, secured. All these are feelings, I know, but I was in the same track a month ago with all stock, so the comparison is recent. On the road, still no problems, no bouncy as previously described. Only some scraping on the driveway when I am not alone in the car. Overall, I would recommend this modification as the one of the best and cheapest, right after the muffler upgrade. Izzy
  3. I installed Eibach Pro-Kit springs on stock US shocks 2 weeks ago (1999 C2). I have not noticed the harsh or bouncy ride you describe, then again the roads in the Carolinas are fairly smooth (15 year NY veteran, huge difference in road quality). Went for a quick fast ride on a loooooong highway ramp, dawn on Sunday, with no one around. Hit 140 mph quickly and the car did feel more stable than before. Will be going to the track next Monday, will let you know my "feelings" afterwards.
  4. Jeff, I have been tracking for a couple of years, about 15 days a year. I change to Pagid orange pads for track. They are noisy in the street, but great for track. I also use ATE Blue or Gold, use alternating colors and flush every few track days or if I feel it loosing power. Road Atlanta, CMP, VIR, Roebling Road, Rockingham, all great tracks in the Southeast.
  5. David, So far I only drove it to work and home twice (16 miles each diretion), but with lots of turns. Alignment this morning, and then will do more driving and highways. But first impression with the Eibachs (about 70 miles) is WOW! Tracks very good, much less body roll during fast turns, and it feels very very stable. Big difference to stock US. Also, in city street driving, not bouncy or "bucking". I had to look for manhole covers to run over to see if I could feel any difference, and can only say that I did not see any deterioration in ride quality. And it is very straight. I have no other changes to the car in suspension. Will let you know how it goes after alignment, got a quick run to golf course later today, and a country drive home. On track 9/11, will report back with how it feels. I am sorry I didn't do it sooner, had the springs in the garage all summer. Also a not a hard DIY. Izzy
  6. Thanks Loren, will try it just that. I recently went to the Time Attack sponsored by EuroTuner at Road Atlanta and qualified, stock suspension and all-season tires. Now I got the lower suspension and will be mounting the new Falken Azenis RT615 for the track. Will be more fun, of course. And yes, got the instruction on how to do install the springs from the site. It took me 5 hours, including dinner, and it was the first time I do it. The dealer quoted 6 hours.......So thanks again for keeping this site up!
  7. Gang, I used lowered my 99 C2 Cabrio using Eibach springs. Lowered about 24 mm, and will be going for alignment tomorrow morning. Any toughts as to which specs to pick? USA Sport, ROW Standard, ROW Sport, or X74? Thank you Izzy
  8. Last night I installed the Eibach ProKit springs. About 5 hours worth of time including short break for dinner. It was not that hard, worse part was removing the strut nut. I drove the car today, drives perfectly, and straight. Will do the alignment Monday morning. I will be on track on 9-11, and will let you know my impressions. Same track I was a few weeks ago, so willl have a good "butt in seat meter" comparison. The car does look better in my opinion. Izzy
  9. Why don't you try it, take some pics? Worse thing that happens is you repaint over them if it doesn't look good.
  10. I have not had any problems with it, and the only add on to the mod was a small rubber gasket on the cap (outisde) part to get a better seal on the box. You can find the gasket at a local hardware or plumbing store, 75 cents. I read somewhere in the Fabspeed site about the issue with airboxes and backfire, which according to what I read was a problem in the oil (air) cooled 911 but not a problem in the 996. That is why Fabspeed cold air kit removes the muffler and uses the screw holes for a sealing cap. I have not had any issues with it. Also a consideration, the smaller area in the intake system is the square section of the airbox. The measured area is smaller than the throttle body.
  11. Dang! That is a load of oil on that canister filter then! Wondering if wrapping the filter on newspaper (Loren suggestion) to remove the oil would prevent the MAF failure. Or simply too much air the MAF can't read (design problem)?
  12. What was/is the yellowish stuff on the body? Oil from K&N?
  13. New Gremlin today. After a 3 day weekend of tracking at Road Atlanta, and opening and closing the top without any problems, I have a fault when I closed the top at home. It seems like it works fine, closed, hook is in, lid is in, but the windows won't go up with the top button depressed. I hear a clicking sound and the top light flashes then stays on. When opening the top, it seems okay up to the point where the windows go up. Then same clicking sound and flashing. Same issue when using the key in door. The reservoir is full, and the clicking sound comes from the controller itself. I remove the battery for 15 minutes, and disconnected and removed the controller, reconnected all back and same problem. Could some switch somewhere not be making contact? The main switch by the pump does make contact. Any thoughts appreciated. Izzy
  14. Sounds like a load of crap. I have been using Super Blue for years, lots of track events. I swap between blue and Motul Gold every other flush because I like the easy to see color changes, ensure a full flush. Super blue is racing DOT 4. But I do use special Porsche certified Bavarian compressed air to fill my tires. Some dealers will charge you for changing the spark plugs on a diesel motor.
  15. My 1999 tiptronic revs in neutral to redline without hiccups. That is how I set off car alarms in the parking garage and scare little children.
  16. Geoff, any pics? Last Friday at a track day I met someone with a 2003 Turbo that had just installed H&R. The car not only looked good, it drove very good too. He was impressed with just the spring setup. So was I, compared to my stock 996, it was flat on all corners. Let me know how it behaves on DE, I have been debating the spring or no spring question.
  17. Sid, I would be glad to send you the instructions I have in PDF file, but it is copyright material, which is why I can't put it in the DIY. However, I if you do the work using the material and take your own pictures, augmented by the official diagram, then it would be fine to put that in the DIY with you as author. Will send you a pm now. Just want to make sure we don't get the board on trouble, it is a very valuable asset. Izzy
  18. I do it on the protruding one. It sort of protrudes toward the rear. But with the puck it covers the whole area pretty much anyway.
  19. Scott, I found useful to keep an old hockey puck to use between the jack and the lift point you show. I need to drive one rear wheel unto a couple of 2X4 short pieces of lumber to gain some extra clearance to fit the puck, but got some rubber spread on the lift area. Izzy
  20. It is hard to tell from the picture, but is the trim piece coming off the lid? If the top closes without problem, then you can narrow down to the lid- 1. Is there anything preventing the top from fully folding, any "stuff" on the ledge that will take space?
  21. And I forgot to ask the most important question, is your wife okay?
  22. I have and idea. My brother-in-law recently traded in his 2003 C4 for a BMW 645 (he is getting old). He had a head-on collision and the same dealer who sold him the 645 repaired the Porsche, so they where aware of the accident, and how "well" it was fixed. During negotiations, he tells me that they knocked off $15-18K for the accident, felt bad since he only had 13Kmiles on it, and the car was perfect. So my idea is to contact a dealer or two and ask for trade-in value for your car, then ask what would be the reduced value from the accident. Does www.KBB.com have anything like that also?
  23. Here is the education I got on sway bars. I depends on what you need or want the car to drive like. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=10120
  24. Classic Armorall on the vinyl and plastic. Armorall also makes a leather product. I use both, and the Armorall for leather also on seats.
  25. Very true. Some of the older style sponges had two sides, one rough one smooth (to remove crayon from painted walls and smooth surfaces). The newer sponges I bouth only had the smooth side, and no issues, as they desintegrate if you press too hard. Still be careful which ones you use, specially on painted surfaces, since both styles are still on some store shelves.
