  1. Here’s the story: Boxster 987S 2005. The battery was flat one morning so used jumper leads from another vehicle battery to get a start. Unfortunately I was fooled by the red tab on my earth lead and connected the jump leads the wrong way round for about 5 seconds. There appear to have been no ill effects, with all systems electrical systems still working, except that the radio and phone module is completely dead. I checked all fuses in the footwell fuse box and none were blown. Next step was to slide out the radio unit and check the 10A fuse at the back. This was found to be blown so, in expectation that all would be ok, I fitted a new fuse and refitted the radio. However, IT IS STILL DEAD! Have I killed the radio or is there anything else I might try?

  4. Richard, thank you for the info and the photograph. The specialist I spoke to seemed to indicate that there was no camera input option on whatever the PCM model is on the Boxster 987-1 and that a later PCM edition would be required. I'm no expert at auto electrics and would prefer a specialist to investigate and fit, or at least a tutorial from someone who has managed to make it work. I will try to look at the back of my unit to compare it with the photo you supplied. I'm nearby in Ascot, by the way.
  5. I have been thinking about fitting a reversing camera to my 2005S. I don't want the clutter of an extra screen so would like the image to appear on stock nav screen. One specialist has advised that this is not possible without upgrading the screen to a later specification and quoted a large sum to do it. My question is, has anyone installed such a set up on their car and would be willing to post some information here?

  9. Just to update my situation. The water temp sensor fail indications returned, along with the 'engine cranks but won't start' problem. I bought a new sensor from Porsche ( about £19) and fitted it in less than 15 minutes. All the warnings have now disappeared and over the past three weeks the car has started instantly, whether hot or cold, and my confidence in the car is restored. For what its worth, when I had the no start problem there was always a very strong smell of fuel after a short period of cranking and I'm guessing that the engine management system might have been sensing a very cold engine each time and was massively overfuelling, leading to the no start situation. This was a quick and easy fix and might be the first thing to try if you are having starting problems.

Well, I learned a lot about engine access, particularly that you can get at the front of the engine (giving access to drivebelts and water temp sensor) via the cover which is on the bulkhead behind the seats. Just flip up the carpet and remove the 6 10mm bolts and 2 10mm nuts and you are in. I also opened the top engine cover for good measure. The engine was quite dusty, so gave it a clean and 'tweaked' every sensor I could see. I also entirely removed the temp sensor, rather than just disconnecting the plug, by accident. If you pull out the green plastic retaining clip, both items come away as a unit, followed by a torrent of coolant. There is a rubber sealing ring which also gets washed down onto the lower engine cover. I cleaned everything, especially the connections within the plug, and then reassembled. The result was one 'temp sensor failure warning' within a few minutes running, but none since. I have made several journeys, both long and short, which included about a dozen hot starts. So far, the no start problem has not recurred, the engine firing up immediately each time. Whether that is just perverse good luck, or if the problem is fixed, remains to be seen as I use the car more.
  11. Sorry to read about your problem and the attempted fixes. You may have saved me a lot of wasted effort. I have the same problem with my 2005 UK 987S and was about to make a start to fixing it today. The history with my car began with intermittent water temperature sensor failures which were coincident with an increasing reluctance to hot start, just as you described with your car. The engine would spin over but not fire up for several protracted attempts. A a short time later it would start normally. The latest incident stranded me as there was no start at all, and this time a yellow engine symbol came on during each start attempt and a message advising to take the car to the dealer. I called rescue to trailer the car home, but 30 minutes later it started normally and I got myself home. I'm thinking, as a first step, of opening the engine compartment to examine the sensor wires and connections. I'll advise you if it makes any difference.

  15. Today I contacted my Porsche dealer to ask if I could buy an updated navigation CD for my PCM system. My car was supplied in June 2006. I was not entirely surprised, but so disappointed, to hear that in the UK a new CD disc would cost more than 400 UK pounds ( $800 USD) I have deferred a purchase for a year or two. Meanwhile, has anyone tried to copy the latest Porsche nav CD and might make it available?
  16. What I am looking for is some advice on removing the centre consol to get at the handbrake. It is not obvious where the screws and clips holding the consol in place are. Also curious to know if anyone else had this problem. Needless to say it failed just oitside the warranty period.............
  17. I had a developing fault with my 987 handbrake recently. The button which controls the handbrake ratchet would sometimes fail to pop back out, but usually did so after a while. It has now stuck well inside the handle and nothing I have tried will make it come out. The handbrake works if I pull and hold the lever, but it will not lock on with the ratchet. Obviously something has broken or come loose in the rachet mechanism, so can anyone offer advice on how to get at it and what the problem is? Thanks in advance.
  18. Thank you, everyone, for the rapid replies. This is a new problem for me, but I did not realise that it was an old topic. The car is due for the 2 year service soon ( within the warranty period) so I will be able to quote the ENU1726 TSB at them and get it fixed! Now, another thing..........does your 987 feel and sound as if you are driving over bricks during full steering lock, low-speed turns?
  19. My 987s has 7500 miles on it. Particularly when the engine is cold, there is a momentary vibrational buzz from the engine compartment as the rpm passes through 2100 rpm, either at 'trailing' throttle or when decelerating. Has anyone else experienced this problem and know what is causing it? The noise seems to be from an accessory or fitting rather than internal to the engine.

  21. '987 Boxster S': By coilovers I take it that you mean shock absorbers? I called Tech9 and was quoted the option of just a change of springs, or both springs and adjustable shock absorbers. I think that you plan to fit both? The change in ride height is about 25mm in both cases. I will be very interested to hear what effect the changes have on ride quality and maybe you could post a picture. The prices given to me, (fitting extra), were £385 for springs only, £2750 for springs and shockers. Note these are UK pound prices.

I have a 987S with PASM and have been thinking of lowering the ride height, as the car seems to sit a lot higher off the road than my old 986 with sport suspension.A 2-3cm reduction would certainly improve the look of the car, although what it would do to the handling is unknown. I recently received a copy of 911 and Porsche World magazine-Jan 2006 edition. On page 9 is an article about a CaymanS conversion by TechArt which, amongst a description of a number of modifications, includes: "...Suspension too, is tweaked, with sport springs lowering the ride height between 25 and 30mm, and said to be fully compatible with Porsche's PASM suspension.." The car illustrated has huge 20" rims, but you can get an impression of what the lowering does to the look of the car. The contact number given is the UK agent, Tech9, on 0151 425 5911.   23. As previously requested in this forum, can someone please define the advantage of this de-snorking modification? OK- the sound is better, but what about performance/economy? I find it truly strange that this intake is effectively blocked, when it is right over the engine air intake. The engineers at Porsche surely know what they are doing and had their reasons for this design, but it is certainly hard to understand when the earlier models draw air in through this intake. Maybe the cooling fan in the rightside vent might not be so active or noisy if more ventilation came through from the other side? Lets please have some more comment from those who have this modification on their cars so that we can see if it is a worthwhile proposition. I have learned from long experience that 'stock is best', particularly when it comes to resale time, so do we know better than years of Porsche research and development, or will they introduce this mod in next years model?
  24. My 987 has 19" carrera classics. They look superb and the tyre grip is phenomenal. Do you have the PSM option on your car? With PSM active, the 19" wheels give a smooth ride over almost any surface ( we know- we toured the west of Ireland) . With PSM selected off, the ride is firm and somewhat 'jiggly', but it is not unaccepatable in what is a true sports car. If you have not optioned PSM, go for the 18" wheels and tyres. The greater tyrewall depth will give extra absortion of vertical displacements and a smoother ride. Few people will notice the reduced grip under normal road conditions. Sorry to be pedantic but you mean PASM rather than PSM...... PASM is always "on" but it has two modes, sport mode (which you activate via a switch) is harder than normal mode which is always there doing its thing when you don't need the added response given by sport mode. Also the 18" wheels and tyres give just as much grip as the 19"...... in the UK the 18" usually come fitted with Mitchelin Pilot Sport tyres which are actually better than the Continental tyres fitted to the 19"s...... You are right, it is PASM. The ride on 19" wheels is fine in 'normal' mode on all surfaces, but firm and not so comfortable in 'sport' mode, as one might expect. My 19" wheels are UK dealer supplied and are Michelin Pilot Sports.
