  1. On one level, LNE saying that 3 of the 4 failures were due to improper installation eases my concern, but then again, aircraft manufacturers always attribute crashes to pilot error.
  2. The 3 failures figure for the LNE bearing comes directly from LNE's website.
  3. I had the LNE bearing installed at 37k about 16 months ago after reading about it on the various forums. As my car is a Tip, there was no offsetting the labor with a clutch replacement, and the net result was a bill of around $2k. LNE says that 3 failures have been reported, which presumably occurred far earlier than the 90k mtbf estimate of the oem bearing. I'm not sure what that says about the longevity of the new bearing. I do know that I would be furious if I paid to replace my functioning ims only to have the "improved" bearing grenade my engine shortly afterward. Another point is that I don't believe that the cause of the oem ims bearing failures was ever definitively identified. Why did some fail at less than 30k miles while many others exceed 140k? With the lack of information from Porsche, we can only speculate. Maybe the design of the bearing isn't the problem. Maybe it's an issue with the ims shaft that puts extra stress on the bearings in some cases. In that event, changing the bearing before it fails is the key, not whether it's ceramic or oem. It will be interesting to see how forthcoming LNE is with statistics as time goes by. I'm only putting about 5k miles/year on my car so i have time before the next suggested bearing change. Hopefully by that time significant real-world data will be available to help me decide.
  4. The voice of reason. As with most things, making something into something it wasn't meant to be is always more expensive and the results are usually disappointing.
  5. Mine was missing also. I bought a replacement from Pelican Parts for about $30.
  6. Sorry to hijack, but this seems like a good place for my questions. I have a spare key that came with my 2000 C2. It will start the car but will not remotely lock or unlock it. The battery is good and I've tried resetting it by starting the car with it and pressing the button. Would this require the $300 dealer programming to get the remote working? Also, the spare key is in better shape than my primary key. Can I just swap the electronics or would I be risking messing up that one as well?
  7. Check the spot near the visor where the cab top locks into the windshield frame. I had a rattle there. If you're lucky and that's the problem it's an easy fix. Pop out the plastic tab where the visor connects and tighten the two screws. I don't recall if you need an allen wrench or torqs screwdriver.
  8. Check out Carnewal: http://www.carnewal-...om/cpx_p074.htm Someone I met at a recent Autocross event had one with the paddle shifters on his Tiptronic 996tt and said he loves it. The right paddle upshifts and the left paddle downshifts. He paid 875 euro (about US $1500 at the time) for it, Airbag included. Be careful when pricing steering wheels because many quote prices that don't include the airbag. He also said that it was easy dealing with the company even though they are in Belgium.
  9. No tuning is necessary. I was worried about "ruining" my car too, so I purchased a used set of mufflers and had them modified. That was a waste of money because now my original cans are sitting in my garage. You can always find a set of used mufflers for sale if you decide you don't like the FisterD's, but I've never heard of anyone going back to stock.
  10. Btw - I've had my FisterD's on for about 8 months and they still make me smile every time I take the car out. My wife even gets a kick out of them. Why would you need an actuator - to change the setting from "Joy" to "No Joy"?

  12. I've read, but can't verify, that the problem with the rear side-marker is that the plug is non-polarized, so it is easy to install it incorrectly and blow the fuse. If you look up auto lighting in Wikipedia, you'll see that rear side-markers are required by law. Are you saying that the rear side-markers will work even if they are not plugged in? I read on Rennlist or 6SpeedOnline (not sure which) of someone who successfully hooked up the side markers after initially blowing the fuse. I'm thinking of getting the same lights, but I'm confused on this issue even though I've read a lot about it.
  13. Loren, I don't mean to hijack, but I have the same wheels that were a factory option on my MY 2000 C2 Cab. My front wheels are the same as above (7.5x18- ET50), but my rear wheels are 9x18ET 52, which you indicated were Boxster wheels. The rear tire size is 265/35 ZR18, which matches the TSB you alluded to. The TSB doesn't show an 18 inch wheel of 9 inches, so I'm kind of confused about this. My car had one previous owner, who was meticulous about having it dealer maintained, so I doubt that she would have changed the wheels on her own. Is my set-up safe - 10 inch tires on 9 inch wheels? How can I find out more about this, considering I firmly believe that these were the original wheels that came from the factory?
  14. I guess you could try adding a small piece to the end, but 8 feet is still better than 0-2. Think of it as a safety feature.
  15. There seems to be a little bit of a discrepancy between the DIY and the TSB. I followed the TSB and had good improvement. If you haven't shortened the white wire yet, cut off 100mm from the end. Peel back the black sheathing as necessary so that 130 mm of the white wire is showing. Re-wrap the wire bundle, keeping the white wire outside of it. ( The white wire should be facing the interior of the car.)
  16. No, the Becker cable that I'm talking about doesn't have a generic Aux-In cable. It is Apple-specific. I wanted a single cable that played and charged the iPod/iPhone. They probably have cables that handle other devices. Their website is kind of lame, so the best bet is to call and tell them exactly what you want.
  17. I used a plug & play solution from Becker Sound. The cable was $110 if I remember correctly, and it plays and charges my iPod Touch and iPhone right out of the box. It plugs into the CD changer outlet on the back of the CDR220.
  18. Just Google Motormeister and you will find pages and pages of angry customers. Your intermix problem could be a cracked head, which is significantly cheaper to fix than a full rebuild. Do a search here and on Rennlist for threads by Dharn. He's posted some excellent write-ups concerning his experience with that issue. I believe he has a 2000 C2, as do I.
  19. I find the arrows on the V1 to be very useful, along with the threat count. If the arrow goes from front to side to back, you know you passed it. If it stays in the back, you know he's following behind you. If it stays in front, you know he's ahead of you traveling in the same direction.
  20. I had never owned a Radar Detector, nor even considered buying one before picking up my C2 Cab. It came with a stealth installed Valentine-1 and I love it, especially on long highway trips to Atlantic City or to Upstate New York.
