  1. Changed out the plugs and coils on my 2001 996. 996 fired up and ran beautifully after tune up no CEL's. Performance and drivability is noticeable. Start up much quieter, idle more stable and smooth as well as gear transitions smooth. The installation procedure as stated in many forums is correct, make sure you take your time and leave enough time so you don't rush though. Access is the major issue and a bit of a PIA to access the the furthest cylinders #1 and #4. However found the most challenging part was unscrewing and screwing back the mounting screws for # 1 and #4 Coil packs. Just as long as you have a good tool kit with adapters, etc etc... Getting everything out and back in again is doable, not easy, but doable... I actually found that doing my 2004 Cayenne S Coils and Plugs more of a hassle. It's interesting that I was having issues/codes referring to both # 1 and #4, may be coincedence or maybe the Porsche tech who replaced them a couple of years ago had access issues like I did and did not correctly install? (just a thought) The plugs that were replaced were Beru, I went with the Bosch "Super" "OEM" non Porsche Branded plugs as well as the Beru "OEM" non Porsche Branded coils.. So far so good!
  2. Just got the MaxiDAS DS708 from HF, you do get 1 year of updates and 1 year of support, its a pretty slick tool for the price.. The yearly renewal for maintenance and support is a bit of a concern though, but the tool is quite trick!
  3. Yes, that was my understanding too, 1 year of updates and support included for the DS708 for the 1st year .. Looks like the renewal costs will run between ~$600 - $800 /year Ouch! http://www.aeswave.com/DS708-Total-Care-Program-Subscription-for-1-yr-p9201.html Here is some interesting Porsche related info for those who are considering this scanner as well... Mind you this scanner also covers about 50 other Foreign and Domestic Makes which makes it even more appealing (IMHO) http://104.171.4.62:8800/Download/Veh/MaxiDas/Porsche/en_MaxiDas_Porsche%20FUNCLIST.pdf
  4. Also, as long as the engine is out, make sure you have them replace the engine mounts.. Trust me..!
  5. I don't believe that is true cause I read on HF website user ratings and they said you must do the update to get the latest version that will support more vehicles and bug fixes IE WiFi updates etc...
  6. Thanks JFP, I'm going straight with OEM.. No need to mess around with aftermarket considering the importance of these parts. As long as I see no oil on old plugs = tubes OK? should I run my finger down into tube?
  7. I ordered the MaxiDAS 708DS, its on back order (of course :cursing: ) Ill let you know my thoughts about it when it arrives hopefully end of the month
  8. FYI, Fixed my issue, the sensors were not fully seated into the housing, there is some "audible" click confirmation but not much. It did not look as obvious when I installed the sensors in the housing the first time.
  9. Hello, just want to resurrect this post... I'm getting misfires on a couple of cylinders in my 2001 996 Cab. and looks like CEL codes point to either packs, sparks or both. So going to a complete service and replace the whole lot. See at Pelican Parts and ECS Tuning Coil Packs Choice of: OEM, Beru, Hamburg Technic and TPI Spark Plugs Choice of: OEM(Bosch), Bosch, Beru, & NGK Too many choices, just want to go with most reliable and cost effective. Suggestions please? Also, should I replace the sparkplug tubes(and O Rings) while I'm there?
  10. Thanks for the advice kgoertz, looking at others with same issues as well.. Could also be as simple as a fuel cap not sealing properly either. But I think it is time to change plugs and packs, the plugs were changed about a year or so ago and not sure if the packs were ever changed out (probably original) From the DIY's I've seen you don't need to drop the exhaust to pull and replace the plugs and packs
  11. 10-4 JFP, thanks for the sage advise... I'm waiting on that MaxiDAS 708DS to show up and may get some further clues as well. I may just change out those offending plugs and the complete coilpack set as a package deal, the time to get to them and look, may as well change them out anyway. Quickly back on the brownish creamy sludge in the oil filler tube. I'm reading that Mobil 1 0-40 that I been using may be more water prone than others such as Motul? Do you recommend switching to a Motul oil or just change Mobil 1 more frequently? I'm thinking that possible misfiring due to condensation due the outside temp and that the engine did not have time to burn off excess moisture inside causing the misfire? Just stabbing at possibilities
  12. Do you think this may be due to a clogged fuel filter? I believe this 996 is still running on its original filter. I would think that if that was the case it would effect the whole engine and not just certain cylinders. The plugs were changed about a year ago because of this issue cropping up but I do not think the coil packs were replaced. There is no deeper scan to do other than to start replacing Coil packs (and plugs again) for cylinders 1 and 4 ?
  13. I was checking my oil level and looked under the filler tube/cap this is what I'm seeing...Light brown creamy substance... My first thought was intermix however the CET looks clean and clear. I read that this substance is common is oil and water vapor from running the car on short trips which do not allow it to burn off the moisture in the oil. Not sure if this could be related to what is going on with the misfire.
  14. I've had this issue a while ago but resolved after changing sparks and oil, but it has come back for some reason... 2001 996 Cabriolet with ~61K on the odo it was fine this morning going into work...Started engine this afternoon, engine immediately rough idle, with blinking CEL. Was told by Porsche Dealership (master tech) if and when this happens in neutral to increase RPMs for about a minute or so and then turn off engine and restart. Did that a couple of times and engine refresh and idled smoothly again. CEL remained on and lit but no blinky Pulled codes with generic scanner P0300, P0301, P0304 I was told by Porsche Dealership (master tech) that it could be a "sticky" lifters... He said they are very small and could be gummed up etc... Any ideas? Thoughts? Suggestions? Much appreciated, Happy new year! (way to start it out for me with this issue!)
  15. Is there a diy for the engine mounts out there? I read the non turbos are "relatively" easy to change and can get around lifting engine with non turbo
  16. I would get that in writing as part of a "money back guarantee" before you consider buying it. Tools, like the Autologic system, which does and excellent job on Porsches and many other cars, opens at around $12K set up for Porsche, +yearly updates, + other make modules. And please do not post multiple copies of the same post in different areas of RennTech (I already removed your duplicate posting), it violates the terms you agreed to when you joined. The reason I posted in both forums Cayenne and 996 is I'm fortunate to own both of them and I wanted to hear from both clans on their experience on either vehicle. Is it possible to repost back to Cayenne Forum as well? We have a forum section titled "Diagnostics, Tips and Diagnostic Tools" which is specifically for the discussion of diagnostic tools or systems for use on or across any Porsche models; in the future I would suggest posting similar topics there. Hi JFP I went ahead and posted in that forum, hope you don't mind :)
  17. Hi VWicary Thanks for the info... As you see i have both a 04 Cayenne and 01 996

Hi JFP in PA The reason I posted in both forums Cayenne and 996 is I'm fortunate to own both of them and I wanted to hear from both clans on their experience on either vehicle. Is it possible to repost back to Cayenne Forum as well? As for guarantee, this is what Autel sent me back on my inquiry on the MAXDAS DA708.... (BTW you can pick them up used for ~$600 and new for ~$800) Q..."What is your compatibility/support for 1999 and up Porsche vehicles with your maxidas DS708?" Autel - A: "The DS708 should have no issue communicating with any Porsche from 1999 and up...." Q... "...Does your system allow for resetting adaptation such as tiptronic transmissions as well as throttle body. Also window setting, service reminders and other built in convenience setting for Porsche vehicle. I was looking at the durameteric scanner for Porsche, but if your reader does the same scanning capabilities then I would prefer to go with yours since your scanner is compatible with more than one vehicle..." Autel - A: "... It will have no problem with adaptions. Just keep in mind that it can not flash/program modules. Other than that the DS708 will serve you well...."
  19. Hello, Anyone have first hand experience with this Scanner? The Autel MaxiDAS DS708 http://www.autel.us/Products/ds708.htm I'm getting close to either getting the Durametric or this Autel MaxiDAS DS708. I like the Autel MaxiDAS DS708 for a number of reasons, including support for more than one "brand" of vehicle, all in one design, etc... I spoke to Autel and they told me that this does everything EXCEPT "it can not flash/program modules..." Any thoughts or comments greatly appreciated!
  20. Hey Loren! Changed out my battery today for my 2001 996 with CDR-220 SER: 15075045 Did i miss seeing the code when I put the radio in "Becker 1" mode?
  21. I used Ultra Lube Lithium grease http://www.lowes.com/pd_36389-75041-10307_0__?productId=3693222&Ntt=litium+grease&pl=1&currentURL=%3FNtt%3Dlitium%2Bgrease&facetInfo=
  22. Ahsai, Thanks, for some reason I overlooked that specific picture.. I'm getting good at taking apart and putting back together. Hopefully for the last time.
