  1. Do not know about the oil guage. Even if you do not have the obc it is possible to have the temp displayed. The dealer enable it.
  2. Not saying that you are wrong but show us hard numbers that confirms this statement. Yes 17 DOT R's are stiff. Stiffer than street 18's with shorter sidewalls? Even if they are, 17 DOT R's are usually driven on better surfaces. Also the wheel is infinitely stiff compared to a tire sidewall. An 18 wheel/tire is then more likely (where the wheel is 18 inches and the tire is 7 inches) to transmit more shock to the body versus a 17 wheel/tire (where the wheel is 17 inches and the tire is 8 inches) regardless of the relative stiffness of the 18 versus the 17 tire. You can argue this either way. Unless you can measure it you do not really know which effect is greater.
  3. Have you disconnected the drive shaft from the transmission (6 hex bolts)? Did you disconnect the sway bar? Also did you remember to loosen the axle nut first? Once you undo the transmission bolts you should be able to depress the control arm enough to take out the strut and wheel carrier. Once the strut and wheel carrier are out then the strut should slide right out of the carrier.
  4. I believe it is the shortened sidewalls of the 18's. 18's are stiffer and heavier. Average road shock to the frame is greater. I believe the problem was cracking at the suspension mounting points
  5. If it is a manual then the clutch interlock switch may be intermittent or you may not be depressing the clutch all of the way or something may be interfering with the clutch travel (floor mat).
  6. Yes. You may want check your tire pressures. Even if they are okay you may want to pump them up 5# if you are going to let the car sit for a while. Just do not forget to reset the pressures when you take the car out.
  7. If you do not over oil the K&N then you can use that (it comes pre-oiled for the first use but then you have to clean it and re-oil it when it gets dirty). However a lot of people have had problems with fouled MAF's possibly due to over oiled filters. I have re-oiled mine 2 or 3 times without incident. Obviously the stock one does not have that problem. I doubt that it makes a whole lot of difference which one you use. YMMV
  8. If that does not work then get out your dremel tool and cut a slot across the hole and use a big screwdriver. Whenever I have rounded out phillips screws that is what I do.
  9. It is possible to remove the drive shaft without removing the hub (wheel carrier). After jacking up the car you remove the flat strut that runs at a diagonal from the side of the car towards the back. After undoing the axle nut and the bolts to the transmission you can then slide the drive shaft out. You do need a 350 ft-lb torque wrench to retorque the axle nut.
  10. What dip stick are you talking about? I believe the clutch reservoir is the same as the brake reservoir which does not have a dipstick. If you are talking about the one in the engine compartment that is the power steering fluid. What do you mean by stiffening up? Are you saying the effort is greater now?
  11. My floor mats creep intolerably; I looked them over when I first noticed the problem, and found a pair of plastic clips on the back end of the mats. I couldn't figure out what they hook to, however, and concluded they may have been after market or something. So they clip to the seat mounting bolts, huh? Is there a ring or hook of some sort on the bolts? Thanks. - Pete <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You need the plastic retaining straps. They should have come with the car mats.
  12. You need more pressure in the rear as a 996 has more weight back there compared to a boxster. 36/40 is a reasonable starting point.
  13. Once you remove the two little screws and remove the handles for the adjustments you just push the panel up then pull out. There is a plastic tongue/catch at the bottom edge. What you are trying to do wont be easy as there are all kinds of weird things you have to do to take a seat apart. Good Luck. Alternatively you can take the seats to an auto reupholsterer. They can probably take care of it as they have the experience. That is what I did when I had seat heaters installed.
  14. Make sure that you are in the right hole. The others are for adjusting the aim of the headlight and those will rotate as opposed to the headlight release lever.
  15. You can asked all you want on the race board. We do not get that much traffic and you will certainly get a lot of opinions.
  16. Should not have to order as they should have come with the mats. You may want to check all the storage bins to see if you have them already. Also check the pocket on the spare tire cover. Otherwise the dealer should give you a set gratis.
  17. Are you mats not locked down with either the velcro patches or the straps to the seat mounting bolts (depends on the year)?
  18. The line is not plastic. It just has a blue plastic coating. Not sure why.
  19. One last note. If you have not realized there is a range of acceptable offsets. If the offset is too high the inside of the wheel/tire will hit the strut (very bad). If it is too low then the outside of the tire will hit the wheel well. Lower ET's will increase the track width of the car which can help with the handling. Also some people like the look of the car where the tires are even with the outside edge of the wheel wells. (The boxster 550 edition is like this as it comes from the factory with 5mm wheel spacers.) Also the acceptable range of ET's will be less if you car has been lowered.
  20. You need an ET of about 40. I believe a 996 18x10 has an ET of 63 which is why you need a 20mm spacer. You could probably go as high as 50.
  21. I do not think that it is a question of being able to repair the transmission. It is more a question of can I get part XXX. Eventually it will happen, just may be a while.
  22. The problem with trying to fix your tranny is that the tear down and rebuild will probably cost about the same as just buying a working tranny. Obviously the removal and installation cost is the same. If you repair your tranny the shop has to disassemble it, figure out what is broken, try and find the parts and then put it back together. Talk to some shops and see if they can give you an idea on how long/how much this will be. The Racers Group in Sonoma is a good place to start. Depending on where you are in the bay area there are a number of other places.
  23. The clear bra kit should also include the headlights, mirrors, door handles, door sills, fuel door, wheel wells. If not then shop around if you go this route. $995 is a typical price. You may be able to find a cheaper place.
  24. I would say you are over though I would also say do not to worry about it especially if you car burns oil. I would believe the dipstick. Again I always put in 8 first, check the level and then add to the hi line on the dipstick. Then correlate with the dash indicator. You can always siphon some out through the fill tube.
