  1. I knew there was one on the front, but not one on the back too. Loren's knowledge of these cars is pretty incredible.

Given Tim's travails I can understand his pessimism, but if you are not seeing contamination in the oil (on the dipstick) or in the coolant (look in the tank) I think this is just the common gunk from cold weather. Since I bought my car in 2000 I have gotten this residue in the filler neck during the winter. When I had my intermix it was way beyond what you see here. It would be worth draining the oil to take a good look at it.
  3. Tim I know a local guy who found a flaw in a casting, I forget if it was a head or the block. He fixed it and then rebuilt the engine . It was the car fromTexas that was in threads for a while. He bought it from a lady that had experienced an intermix and the mechanic sold her on new head gaskets which was a waste of money. After the fix he sold it back to the lady. I will give him a call and find out where the flaw was. Sorry to hear about your travails.
  4. I like the look of the black wheels with the white rims on the white car. But you can't really see the style of the wheels in these pictures.
  5. Phillipj- So you are still willing to talk to those of us who have not upgraded to a Turbo? Was the glacier white the one that you tried to swap the engine on?
  6. The tips for the 3.6 won't work on a 3.4 car. The rear bumper was changed in 2002 and the position of the tip opening was moved. You can use your old tips on the new cans though.
  7. Wow, a thread from my past resurrected. I did an incredible amount of cleaning . Had all the hoses off, the radiators out and flush, pulled cloths through the pipes, changed the water pump, had the one head off and drained the engine on the stand, flushed the system with distilled water , changed the coolant twice, had a hose leak that flushed more out of the system. And with all this I am willing to bet that if you analyzed my coolant you would still find traces of oil in it. The only thing I did not take apart and/or flush was the heater core. I don't think you can ever get it all out. But I have over 16,000 mile since the fix and the engine is running strong.
  8. Forget the dry ice. Been there, done that. It does not really work. But a good dentless repair tech can work miracles. I have been amazed at what they can do. If there is a crease in the metal or it is at the edge or seam of a panel it may be a problem. Otherwise they do work wonders.
  9. Depends on how Porsche defines "lifetime." if the engine fails due to bad coolant then that could be the life of the engine. Seriously, changing the coolant every 3-4 years avoids the issue of degrading coolant. Of course with Porsche coolant, and the 5+ gallons that the system hold this can be expensive . And there is some labor involved if you want to flush out all the old coolant. I for one don't use the Porsche coolant. But I had the engine out, the radiators out and most of the hoses off so all the old coolant was pretty much gone (done due to cracked head and intermix).
  10. When I put the PSS10's on my car (2000 C4) the half shaft on the drivers side came out of the differential. I did not see the circlip. I cleaned up the splined end of the shaft and slid it back in. Then when driving I noticed a leak. It turned out that the shaft had not slid all the way back in so that the race eas fitted into the season the diff housing. I used a wooden drift held against the flange on the half shaft and light taps with a hammer to slide the shaft all the way in. No more leak. So I had the diff fluid topped up and it has been 8,000-10,000 miles and no more leak and the shaft has never come back out. Now I am not sure if the circlip was on the end of the shaft or not, but they don't seem to hold the shaft In very strongly if that is what they are supposed to do. Just my experience.
  11. Trunk emblems can be added and brakes can be painted, but the trunk will tell the truth (although I guess someone could put C2 running gear in a C4 body shell: :huh: ).
  12. They stopped updating these years ago, so even if you find some discs they will be way out of date. I bought a Garmin a few years ago but I hav even stopped using that ($80+ a year for updates). I use my smart phone that has navigation, voice etc. and updates constantly and is free (except for the phone).

I am not sure that Loren has the time, or should get involved in these types of disputes, it could take up way too much of his time, etc. but at least making the old post available would be appropriate. If there is a member out there "selling" stuff here that is not for real we should all know it.
  14. The vacuum relay just open and closes a valve, it does not "hold" a vacuum. There is a small reservoir that get the vacuum from the intake plenum and is supposed to hold a vacuum even if the engine is off. It could be the relay or the tip switch. But if it goes to the quiet mode once this indicates that there is vacuum.
  15. Not sure how it is not goods or services?? What is it then. Did you use a charge card to pay Paypal? If so you might be able to dispute the charge. Now this may be controversial but I think you should post the name and information of the seller here along with the details of the transaction. Then let the seller respond if he chooses to do so. We would all benefit by knowing if a member is not to be trusted.
  16. Passenger side or Drivers side? Partial power or full power? Lumbar? Keep an eye on eBay as they are on there all the time.   17. I believe that there is a different shape to the center of the connectors to prevent the switching of the two.
  18. Go to YouTube.com and watch Porsche 986/996 Indicator stalk replacement . Pretty good instructions and pictures. There are others on the blogs and YouTube .
  19. Unfortunately dealer often = stealer. It is one thing to charge the rates that many dealers do, but to double the time is crazy. The system will have to be flushed of air but that is only 30 minutes or so.
  20. Sorry my mistake, haven't benn in my engine for awhile now. It is the slots on the end of the exhaust cam that are used to set the timing on 3.4 engines. When the engine is set at TDC on the proper rotation of the crank the slot on the end of the exhaust cam should be straight up and down with the narrow side out. It this is off by 1.5 mm I think that is potentially a significant timing issue, although it is hard for me to visualize exactly what you mean by 1.5mm. But each 1degree of error at the cam is equal to 2 degrees at the crank. Have you checked both sides?
  21. Are you saying that you removed the green plug on the intake cam an with the engine at TDC the slots on the cam are 1.5mm off. If so this is a significant numbers of degrees (remember that the cams only rotate once for every two rotations of the crank.
  22. A failing cam actuator should not affect the idle. Could be a failing throttle body on an E-gas car. Mine failed this summer after displaying surging, bad idle, etc.
  23. Aftermarket suppliers make slotted top mounts and you can get GT3 control arms OEM and aftermarket. Both of these allow much greater control of the camber.
  24. The receiver is the same but OEM the 996 does not have the ability to raise and lower the top with the remote key fob. This true for the use spec cars, a DOT constraint. With European cars I think this capability was standard. There is a "RemoteTop" aftermarket product that gives US spec cars this option. I have/ had it and loved it. Unfortunately mine quit working after a year or so and the manufacturer did not warranty it for what they said was a known defect . I admit is was "out of warranty" for the product, but the manufacturer acknowledged the problem and said they had redesigned the product to eliminate the failure but would not replace mine. They did offer 25%off a new module. Still may do that sometime as I loved the capability of opening and closing the top with the remote, but really felt they should have replaced the unit given the acknowledged the design defect. I just noticed that you are from Ireland so your car should have the capability. With the use mods once the process strat you don't have to hold the remote button.
