  1. Well, everyone contributing or not can use the Search feature here... and when I searched for "double DIN" I got 17 results. Try looking a little further or use search before you complain... ;) Aaagh ! I hate this ! I was searching for "dual DIN" ... and the only result was my original question itself ! searching for DUAL (not double) DIN brings up the goodies !! Thanks Loren and sorry for "complaining" !!
  2. Wow ... I cannot believe nobody at renntech has tried this before ??!! No offense meant to anyone, but does becoming a paying member improve my chances that someone replies ? Cheers ! Sid
  3. Hi, I was about to get a PCM 2 module from a 2003(?) turbo for $400 but the guy gave it to his cousin :( ! Anyway so that leaves me with this option .... I'm thinking of installing a dual DIN (double the height of a "regular" stereo) system replacing my current becker CDR-210. I'm ready to moving the AC controls lower (the cd trays area or the empty storage area) so that I can have an open area to accomodate the dual DIN unit. How do I do this and what parts would I need ? BTW, I'm thinking of the Eclipse AVN5435 system. Any other recommendations ? I'm staying away from single DIN navigation systems since I think its pretty shabby to have a screen roll out and fold up. Prefer a cleaner solution. cheers ! Sid
  4. Hi, I'm trying to make a custom part where my ipod will sit on a stand which is fixed somewhere around the ash tray area. I don't use the ash tray and that area looks prime for reclaimation ! The image above shows the ash tray + the plastic holding the 4 switches (2 window + 2 seat heaters). I'm open to altering/replacing either the ash tray or the larger plastic bracket or both if required. Note, the pic above is not from my car, but more for illustrative purposes only ! So I'm trying to find out all the plastic parts that fit in that area so I think of all the different ways I can modify those parts to work towards my design. So far all I know are 1. The plastic piece with the window+seat heating switches and the ash tray in it (the pic above) 2. The same plastic bracket as above BUT with a open compartment where the ash tray is in the above part Is there a 3rd/4th option that can fit there ? More specifically is there a part with an opening to take a 12V female power supply ? Any pictures of those parts ? Thanks Sid PS: How do you guys find out these part numbers ? Is there a way I can do this too (for cheap) ?!
  5. 1st, thanks for the pics ! A pic is worth a 1000 words ... true in this case ! :) So I'm assuming that you've not exposed the round female power socket in an accessible area ? You've connected your wires thru the regular car chargers and kept the whole bundle (female power socket + male car charger) in that space running only minimal wires in/out ? 1) What's the part number for the dual female power socket you mentioned in your 1st post ? 2) Any ideas on what the maximum current capacity is for the 12v supply ? I wanted to put in a fuse with around 75% of the max current capacity so I don't blow things deeper in the wiring ...
  6. Hmm, that's pretty nice. What is the part number on that dual-power source socket ? Also, where and how did you mount them ? Looks like the male end of the dual power supply fits onto the female "phone power supply" cable from becker ? Am I right ? Also, do I really need the becker phone power cable (p/n 5001.524-276) ? Can't I directly tap into the power wire that might already exist in the car ? Is there an installation guide online on how to install the becker phone power cable ? That way I can identify the existing power wires and directly use them instead of adding an intermediate 4 pin plug becker provides. I'm thinking of this since it appears that all the becker unit does is provide a 4 pins socket while all I really need are just wires (+ a 1-2 amp fuse in the middle from radio shack). Once I've identified the power wires, I stick in the dual power supply like the one you use. The nthe only problem is mounting those dual power supply sockets as elegantly as possible. Do we know the current carrying capacity of the power lines I intend to tap into ? I wanted to put the appropriate fuses between the wires and the devices... thanks !! Sid
  7. Never mind ... I found the information at http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=5190 Just above the 2nd last picture. Just hope this works on my MY99 C2. Will let you guys know how it went.
  8. Hi, Is there an option to get rid of the ash tray and instead have a 12v DC power supply there with/without some storage area/bin ? I wanted to integrate my iPod's FM transmitter into the ash tray area and have a piece which plugs directly into the cigarette lighter 12v DC socket. If the solution isin't as clean as having a proper cigarette lighter 12v dc socket (the round socket), I can crack open most of the transmitter and directly wire it and reassemble it below the plastic - leaving just the ipod connecting cable visable in that area. I know how to get the middle plastic unit off but I don't know which wires are for what below there. Some snaps would help ! Thanks Sid
  9. Hi, I'm visiting my brother in Cupertino, CA this coming weekend (Feb 3rd - 5th) and wanted to checkout some aftermarket exhausts. I'm thinking of changing the exhausts (muffler incl, not just tips) on my MY99 C2 Coupe. Also, I'd prefer spending under $1k if possible (which rules out the porsche sport exhausts, right?) Now the best thing for exhausts is to hear them in person and hence the call for some exhaust demo(s) :) ! If you're in San Diego then I'd love to hear your carrera exhausts anytime since that's where I live. Anytime other than the weekend of Feb3-5 that is ! Thanks in advance ! Sid
  10. AAh ... feeling a bit better that I can contribute instead of just asking questions ! I had the same issue today ! I got a flat tyre on Friday (6" nail !!) and discovered that I don't have the wheel lock key when I pulled into the tyre repair shop. I had to wait till Monday (today) for the parts section to open. So basically - I filled air in the punctured tyre - drove to the dealership immediately (under 50 mph) with the pressure still holding - had someone from the porsche parts section find which one was "my key". They actually get their wheel lock kit (which has all the 60 or so keys) to the car and they try each one, one by one, to see which one fits you. - once you have a match, they generally have one of each kind to sell immediately else you'd might need to order (and wait) for it to come. The other end of a wheel key is a regular hexagonal head so you can still use the regular tools to get the wheel off. It was a pain, but if it deters the thieves, I'm ok with it. Just keep that wheel key near the donut for the times when you really need it ... Siddharth
  11. It looks really nifty ! $500, most certainly well spent ! Siddharth
  12. Hi, I have the stock CDR-220 CD player on my MY99 Carrera coupe. I've ordered a plug from Becker to add an aux in so I can still play from my ipod till I have a more permanent fix. In the long term I'm looking for a single unit that does the following REQUIRED - satallite navigation (with maps on the screen and voice directions) - plays radio/CDs - hooks up to my ipod so I control the ipod from the stereo itself [The ipod would be sitting somewhere out of sight, getting charged] NICE TO HAVE (but can do without) - 3.5 mm aux in for other players (of course, you'd control from the player itself...) - DVD/Video I've looking around, but would like to hear suggesting your guys may have. I'm hoping it doesn't get too expensive ... ! Cheers, Sid
  13. "MY" is short for Model Year Kim 2000 Cab Cool, thanks ! Well, I've ordered the following thru Sunset - remote lock/unlock keyhead - blank key shank - floor mats (4 piece) - replacement shelf instead of the 4-CD tray holder (996-552-243-0101C) And from Becker I've ordered the - Aux-in plug (BNA-1319) This should get me going for now. In the mean while I'll be hunting for a replacement stereo and speakers+subwoofer. I'm looking at a stereo that may also double as a sat nav. and also talk to the ipod. Any recommendations ? Thanks Siddharth
  14. Hey, that looks nifty !! Where did you get it done and how much ? Also, how long did it take ? Thanks Siddharth
  15. Hmm ... thanks for the rear wing info. Is there a URL where they discuss types on wings/front/side skirts on a 996 and its effects on the aerodynamics ? Floor mats, yeah, Lloyd's seems to be everyone's favourite. And the B&M Short Shifter ... I should have searched a bit more before, a ton of people before me have asked the same. A friend of mine is really interested in doing this to his 2003 C2. LEt me see how that feels so I can decide to mod mine if required. BTW, I've seen people saying MY02 etc .... I'm guessing Y02 = year 2002, what does the 'M' stand for ? cheers ! Siddharth
  16. Yeah, I tried that but forgot to mention it. It didn't work. :( And thanks Macsak !
  17. Well, After much searching I finally found the car of my dreams ! I just bought my 2nd car, a black 1999 Porsche 911. I had been reading around here when making a decision so I thought I'd finally make an introduction and throw a few questions that I already have !! Please go easy if I'm out of line on any forum etiquettes, I mean no offense to anyone. :) Background ======== I first got in love with porsche as a kid, with the matchbox sized toy cars but seriously considered them after driving my brother's boxster. In fact the last month I was test driving several 996's and Boxster S's. Ultimately I went 911 since the boxster didn't have the power that I felt in the 911. Of course, the boxster had amazing balance, but porsche decided to cripple it with horsepower which really pissed me off. Maybe the next 911 could be mid-engine ? I hope Porsche does it, as much as it may seem blasphemous. Anyway, the 996 has superb handling inspite of that so I decided to go for it. Its day 2 today and I'm getting better at "knowing" the car and enjoying that process. (I've driven stick shifts for 5 years, but N-1st shifts still require some thought). Car === - 996 with 51K miles in very good condition. - Black on black with leather interiors - Manual transmission - Texas car bought in LA (I live in San Diego). The dealer in LA was really happy selling it to a "young buyer with his own money" (I've turned 25) since he told me "most people buying it were much older than you". And I'm not very rich, really, I just looked around a lot and I love the car too much ! RICH is what I saw at the dealership the other day --- there was this guy trading in his 996 C2 for a 996 Turbo and he looked like he could have been younger than me ! These young rich brats I tell you ... I'm jealous ! QuestionS ======= So here is the main stuff ... I've got a lot of question. I'm not expecting one person to answer all, but if you find something you know, I'd appreciate it if you could chip in :) Question 1) I've got just one key and the code is lost and the 1-button remote lock/unlock on the current keyhead doesn't work. I know it used to work before and the dealer said I'd need to buy a new keyhead, have it programmed and use the existing cut key shank. That comes to almost $200. If I go for an ENTIRELY new key (and use the one I have as a basic spare key) it comes to $330. I found some other post here with an ebay link for a blank + keyhead + code for $100, so I can then ask him to cut and program for another $100-150 saving 50 bucks. A ) I currently have a (non-working) single button keyhead. If I buy a 2 button keyhead and have it programmed, can I then start remotely operating the front hood or do I need something "extra" to achieve that ? B ) Where can I get the Carrera GT style keyhead for the 996 ? C ) What is the radius of operation for the porsche keyheads ? Question 2) I have the stock basic CD player (ie. no changer) in the central console. Its <something>-220 I think. But I don't use CD's since I have all my music on my iPod. I've heard that you get a set of wires by which you can add an auxillary input to the music system. A ) What is the part number for this aux in so it works even on the basic stock ("220"?) stereo ? Question 3) Can I remove the in-build 4 CD holder/trays (again, not a CD changer, purely holder trays) from the central console and put something more useful like an empty hollow compartment ? Since I'm also thinking of a navigation system, what about some inexpensive navigation system that might go there ? Actually if I club it with question 2, is there a single larger unit which I can use for navigation, stereo and ipod (or have /aux/line in) all in one ? I think not, and if yes, its going to be expensive ! Question 4) I'm thinking of getting a GT3 style rear spoiler (in black) which I can install myself (hopefully easily!). A ) Does this negatively affect the aerodynamic behaviour ? B ) Any recommendations ? Question 5) Maybe this should be clubbed with the above in 3 itself :) ... I'm also thinking of altering the front bumper. I don't want the GT3 bumper since it hits the road everytime I go thru a dip (parking lots etc) but maybe an addon lower lip to the stock front bumper that remains practical. A ) Does this negatively affect the aerodynamic behaviour ? B ) Any recommendations ? Not that the stock look is poor or something, it actually looks good. But the GT3 look is ... verrry NICE ! Question 6) Is there any box or something that I can put on the rear seats (maybe fasten with the seat belt?) which I can use to store papers, pens, maps etc ? Basically a glove box kind of an organizer on the back seat with maybe a cup holder ? I don't have cupholders or a glovebox on my 996 ! Question 7) I need floor mats too. I found http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/PORSCHE-911...1QQcmdZViewItem Is there another alternative ? I tried looking for a "part number" for them so I could search how much porsche "officially" charges us for them ... but I couldn't find it. Maybe I'll just order the above ... $75-80. Question 8) I've heard good stuff about using a short shifter. How easy is it to do this on your own and which part should I order ? If I can't do this on my own, how many hours will it be (to figure out labour costs). Is it worth it ? Whew ! Thats a lot of questions and I'll be really thankful if you guys could help me on it. Thanks in advance ! cheers Siddharth
