  1. Resurrecting an old thread but, I have a similar situation. In my case (2001 S with tiptronic), I have the 26 and 27 sensors, so fore and aft the pre-cat. If the cat is indeed bad ( not sure yet), it would normally be the pre-cat, no? Since the sensors only seem to monitor this cat.
  2. I would start with the chain pads then maybe the fuel tank vent. This may solve a few problems.
  3. Not much information here. Why do you need to replace the camshaft? Used tensioner is a coin toss, but if the price is right... Replace the pads is a no-brainer: easy job, will correct your deviation problems.
  4. The part may be listed as "in stock" but it is not really. I've had one on order for 2 months.
  5. Thanks for the info! Yes it's for the transmission only. I only meant that since the engine and transmission are out of the car, that I would replace all of the fluid including the fluid in the torque converter, around 9 litres in all.
  6. Damned confusing! So many conflicting opinions concerning ATF brands and who makes what, etc. Query to those in the know: Is PENTOSIN ATF1 a viable choice to replace all of the fluid in my tiptronic (2001 986S) ?
  7. I know I ask a lot of questions but better to look a little dumb than to prove it! :rolleyes: I was planning to tie the axles up but I see others have removed them. Pros and cons? Someone mentioned that I should loosen the torque converter bolts before dropping the ensemble. I don't understand this. Thanks for enlightening me! :cheers:

  9. While you can take a Tip out of the Boxster by itself, taking them out as a unit and then separating them can make sense, depending upon what you are doing. Many times it is less work. Well then that's the way I'm going to do it! Bentley's and Dempster's both outline the procedure for a separate drop, which entails certain unplugs and undoes which may not be necessary when they are dropped together. But I guess after I've done this a dozen times, I'll know exactly what I'm doing! Fortunately I've got lots of time over our long Montreal winter to get this figured out! :)
  10. In the Bentley manual, on the first page under engine removal and installation, they say: "NOTE- Porsche recommends removing the engine and transmission as one unit, then separating the two." Then they go on to describe the procedure of dropping the transmission then the engine separately. Huh? I've undone all the top part (hoses, connections, etc.) and I've removed the exhaust, so now I'm looking at the underside and the prospect of reaching all those bolts that attach the tiptronic transmission to the engine makes me think that there may be some sense to Porsche's method. Any thoughts or caveats on this?

I'm trying to put together a part equivalents list which could be of benefit to many enthusiasts who don't want to pay the premium prices demanded by "genuine Porsche" parts which are very often manufactured by companies which supply VW, Audi and BMW to name three. Check out the thread at http://986forum.com/forums/performance-technical-chat/49875-porsche-parts-equivalence-list.html and see if there might be something to add.

And the list of small plastic parts to replace grows longer... ​Didn't go near the garage today but tomorrow they're forecasting a balmy -13, so back to work! With my construction heater blasting, I can get it up to 3 or 4 degrees in there. Suits me fine, it's just the plastic parts that complain! :eek: Didn't remove the bumper but I got the exhaust out with a bit of ingenuity and a modicum of impolite language! Now it;s the transmission's (tip) turn.
  13. Yes, I see that the lifters are the same for the 3.2 as well. I plan to test all the existing lifters in the warm oil bath before I replace any. I was mostly curious to see if there were other parts which were common to other brands and if perhaps a list could be compiled by enthusiasts who like to tackle some rebuild/upgrade projects and keep the costs in line.   14. Thanks for this. My project was delayed due to clement weather in November, but now I am in the midst of dropping the engine in my barely heated garage. This mornings temp was minus 25 C here in Montreal (about -13 F), a bit nippy.
  15. Okay, got it out and took a good look. It's a quick connector. There was a button on it which I was supposed to push (and not pull ) which broke. Then I broke the nipple on one end and the flange disintegrated. But it's just a $2 part. Thanks for your help! :)
  16. I'll just add this on to a long list of parts that I will order all together. Quite a few small unforeseeables made from brittle plastic :huh: as well as the normal stuff.

  18. Hmm...could be that. I thought it was a connector but when I tried to disconnect the connector it disintegrated! Seems a bit dumb to attach a fragile connector with two spring clips. Maybe I don't understand German engineering. :huh: I'll follow the lines tomorrow to make sure I'm not misleading everyone.

  20. Preparing my motor for the drop. All plastic parts are brittle in a 12 year old car. Snapped this puppy in half and I don"t know what it is/does. it"s in the middle of a coolant hose in the rear right of the engine compartment.. I think it"s the oil cooler coolant hose.
  21. pjq, a very pretty picture of your rebuilt motor! Adding the little blue bows was a bit of overkill though! :P
  22. The 6 ton jacks should go to 24" so you should be fine. If you remove the cross member, the wheels will spread (bye bye alignment) but you can pull them back as pjq mentioned with a ratchet strap. Don't forget to post some of those pictures and/or videos! :-)
  23. So, did you drop the engine? I still haven't done mine since I'm still enjoying the snow-free roads. Coming very soon though! (the snow and the engine work) :eek:
