  1. Nice job ! Did you do the work yourself or have it done? How did you get the car back from the ins. co. ? Did u have to buy it after they gave you the $, or did you negotiate the "totaled" price and in essence"buy" it out of that ? Interesting scenario...
  2. There's no way to know that it's (only) the RMS without removing the Transmission. There's also a possibility that the leak is from the IMSB, which is where the "gloom & doom" comes from. Basically what it comes down to is this: RMS minor leak = no big deal, just make sure your oil level remains in the proper spot (on the dipstick and the dashboard monitor). IMSB leaking = potential for disaster...(have you been checking the oil for debris when you change the oil?) The bearing should be pulled and checked/replaced. If the bearing is undamaged, you can get away with replacing it with one of several options (you do the research and decide which is best option for you). If the bearing is damaged, consider yourself A) lucky that the motor hasn't grenade yet (B) Unlucky because now you should tear the engine down to check for further debris/damage, clean out, re-build/re-furb... = Big $... Good luck
  3. You think that Porsche should do a recall on a 15.5 year old car because plastic insulation is breaking down? Hmmm, it would be nice if it happened - good luck with that! I think the suggestions of liquid "tape" or heat shrink tubing are probably more realistic...
  4. These are inexpensive, easy to apply and hold up better than paint the only caveat is that they don't quite cover all the way to the edges...still nice IMO. http://www.ebay.com/itm/141709451679?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
  5. God luck with ^that^... They're usually about 10x that price (approx. $150)
  6. "it only has the electronic gauge, no dipstick anymore, so it must do its job pretty well." Yes, the electronic gauge is fine and accurate, but it's very sensitive to slope - you have to make sure you're on a fairly level surface to get an accurate/real reading.
  7. So how does it sound with the proper amount of power steering fluid? That noise had to be alarming to say the least... I commend you for not freaking out on camera!!!
  8. I find that a level surface is a must for accurate oil level readings via the gauge cluster. In my own driveway/parking area the meter can vary by two to three bars depending on where I'm parked. For this reason I always check the dipstick as well. Best of luck with your 996!
  9. Glad you got it fixed. I think your lesson should be: Don't give up so easily! Had you looked a little further "upstream" you could have identified the problem, fixed it yourself, saved some $ and gotten some real satisfaction! Good luck with your future endeavors!
  10. I gotta get a pair of these - lifting the whole side of the car from 1 jack point just freaks me out!
  11. It seems like it's just the latching mechanism on the switch. Push once, latches on, push again turns off - since it lights and the cc operates if you hold the switch, the contact is being made, the switch just isn't latching. I would take the stalk apart and see if there's a part # on the switch. Here's a link to the diagram for the parts in question http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-parts/hardparts.php?dir=996-99-05&section=903-10 it doesn't show the switch in question per se', but it could be one of the items labeled "cap"...FWIW the whole "column/switch assembly" is only $521.00 so...Good luck
  12. Ok, here they are, no flash... hopefully this ends this inquiry ;)
  13. I'll take a photo of the mark on the shock/strut later on and post it here - Thanks again
  14. Hi Loren, thanks for the reply. The lilac/green are the lower marks. The upper mark is green. The shock has a round purple mark on it (not in photo above)
  15. Hi, I've done quite a bit of searching regarding spring types spring rate codes etc...And haven't been able to really determine without doubt what's on my car. I've got a '99 C4 with 137,000 mi. on it. I can say fairly confidently that the suspension is not "original" (it's very stable, tight and firm with very little body roll - quite impressive actually - I can't see it being original with 137,000 mi.). So, I've recently had the front wheels off and I've seen the spring markings. The fronts are top mark - 1 green bottom marks, 1 lilac/pink 1 green. The sway bar has the green mark, but I think all the C4's have these. In the rear, I haven't had the wheels off, and can't see anything on the springs...the sway bar has the green paint mark... Has anyone got any firm grasp on this stuff? **The actual colors were washed out by the flash on my phone, the colors I "painted in" are pretty close to the actual ones...
  16. Spring thaw???... I've got a blizzard rolling in... Drove the car in a rally yesterday and while the weather was nice, there was plenty of salt on the roads and lots of snow melt, so the car is basically covered with salt and general road grime. To make matters worse, by the time I got to the car wash, it was closed and my hose was frozen!!! Bummer...had to put 'er away all salty and dirty. In addition, if we get the snow they're calling for it could be quite awhile 'til I get 'er out of the garage... :-(
  17. Are there different horns for the alarm and the steering wheel? I think what the OP meant was that it seems that the horns themselves don't seem to be at fault, as they're working for the alarm ( I think they both use the same horn(s) no? ). In any case, it seems to me that either A) the steering wheel horn contacts are dirty or (B) disconnected
  18. "I've put 50k on in 22 months!!" ^This^ seems to be what these cars like best...along with regular maintenance of course ! Keep driving
  19. Are you sure that the switch in the overhead "center console" (by the rearview mirror) is in the proper position? It's a 3 position switch - position 1 =lights off (even with doors open. pos 2 = lights on when doors open. pos 3 = lights on all the time...
  20. If the clutch is slipping, the RPM's would increase not decrease...take it to a different mechanic.
  21. '99 C4 6 speed manual coupe. Ocean Blue Metallic/Savanna Beige full leather. Absolutely love it...I've had it a little over a month and still feel like a kid at Christmas time. 9/10 (just because I think/know that it's going to cost some serious $ to keep it right). I haven't had any "cons" yet except even little stuff is expensive - the price you pay for owning a "car legend"... :king:
  22. '99 C4 6 speed manual. Just passed 137,000 mi. LN IMSB done with clutch @ 100,000... Running great
  23. Hi Loren, I did find the one here, but as I tried to explain (probably poorly worded) there were several codes missing from yours, so I did a net search and found the other one. I apologize if I broke any forum rules/etiquette by posting the link to the other one.
  24. Ocean Blue metallic (L3AZ) as opposed to Midnight Blue metallic (as the p.o. told me)... I don't know what the difference is, and the OBM is absolutely fine by me. I also found this code key that's a little more thorough than the one included on this site (there were a few option codes missing for my car): https://www.stuttcars.com/technical/option-codes/996/ thought I'd share...
