CAN bus

Does anyone know if it is possible to get info from the CAN bus on a 996 Porsche? I am thinking about buying a Durametric OBD2 scanner and wondered if there was anything that can read more output than what is available from an OBD2 reader, short of a full-blown (expensive) shop diagnostic tool.

What information are you trying to see?

I don't know the answer to that question because I don't know what data is communicated on the CAN bus. I suppose that you could say that I would like to see any useful information that isn't currently available via the normal OBD2 feed.

Yes, a lot more. An OBD II reader only reads/resets DME fault codes. The Durametric software can read and reset many other controllers in the car (i.e. ABS, airbag, heating/AC, alarm (read only, etc.).Durametric has a table of what it will do on a 993 here.
