RMS replacement - best shop

Recommended Posts

Hello. My 2002 996C2 may be due for a new RMS shortly (about one drip per week). My choices of dealers are Stead, Fremont, and Oakland. Do any of you folks have any experiences with these shops replacing the RMS? My concerns are installing the seal dry, scratching the seal surface of the crank, not polishing the sealing surface if the crank is scratched. Which shop seems to be the most conscientious? TIA.

I certainly wouldn't have it replaced for 1 drop a week. You run the risk of doing much more damage to the car by having the engine removed and the disassembly needed for the seal replacement and put back together. The 1 drop could become 3, not to mention all the things you could find that have not been put back togerter correctly, damaged or broken in the process. I know, I'm in a related business, and it happens much more often than not. The faster the Techs do the job the more they and the Dealer make.

I appreciate your input. You are correct, there is a risk that the repair will be worse than the original problem. Sometimes I wish I could do the repair myself. When I raced motorcycles in the '70s I did all the engine and chassis work myself.

The one drop per week is an average since July. Prior to July there was a weep but no drops. So, the problem is progressing. I am asking for input so I'll can minimize the risk when the time comes.
