Is this normal?...

Recommended Posts

#1- ISSUE-My Boxster has 33,000 miles -It's an 02'...I just took it to my dealer for an oil change and some exterior issues...3 months later and @ 1500 miles I find out my rear main seal is leaking.

#2- Is this a normal time frame for a gently used vehichle to have this issue ??

#3-What should I expect to pay to have a dealer repair this ??

#4- The dealer tells me it's a $33 dollar seal and over $1500 in labor. Must remove the tranny to access?? WTF?

any info would be much appreciated...

Sorry.

Not uncommon.

Repair for RMS should be closer to $1,000 though.

While you are there expending money, check your clutch, flywheel for damage and repace it if necessary, it will save you some more money later. Is sad that you have a RMS bad, it is common to say the least on 996 cars.

Have you owned the car since new? Is this a Porsche dealer? Although you say it is a "2" It could have been delivered new less than 4 years ago and could have some warranty left. If you bought it used you should find out from the Porsche dealer the service history on the car. Porsche has had many problems with leaking rear main seals and have in fact changed the the design of the seal because of that.

And if the leaky seal contaminated the clutch you could have more problems.
