Hi, newby here. My 02 996 coupe front hood and fuel filler door no longer lock/unlock with the key remote. Any ideas?

Dead battery in the remote?

Dead battery in the remote?

Doors lock/unlock fine with the remote, so I assume it must be electrical in the car, not the remote?

Both go to the alarm/central locking control unit.

Any other weird electrical problems?

No, that's it! Weird eh?

I would find a shop with a PST2 or PIWIS tester and have them go through he alarm and locking tests.

I'd hate to see you replace the control box if the tester can pinpoint another source of the problem.

sounds to me as if the actuator (solenoid essentially) that locks the gas cap may be failing or the actuator isn't getting power. Not sure what the fuse location would be for the gas cap actuator. As Loren says, getting the OBD II codes is probably the next step.

If you listen by the fuel door and hear the latch actuating, then it is a mechanical problem .... not an electrical / auto door lock one.

I have found it common for the linkage driving the plunger (which locks the fuel filler door) become loose and ineffective. The most common effect I have seen is for it to fail to lock .... but there is no reason it could not fail to unlock also.
