987 Suggested Performance upgrades

Recommended Posts

We have just recently joined the ranks of 987 owners with a 2007 in Arctic Silver, and have been enjoying it immensely as a daily driver soon to be at sea level in CA.

What would you suggest for making it even more fun ?

Join your local PCA (or similar) and learn to drive your new car near its potential. Engage in events like AutoX and DE events. Right now the car far exceeds your driving capability (true for me too!).

Agreed - also, once you do start to push the envelope on the car's capabilities, suspension upgrades will be the next area for substantial improvements.

Keep in mind that the car works as a system - each item you modify has the potential to force modifications elsewhere. For example, lowering the car can yield a useful performance improvement, but may necessitate changes to the lower control arms and/or toe links and/or camber plates if you plan to restore factory alignment specs. You can forego the factory alignment specs, but that will increase your tire wear.

One other thought - the car is a balance of trade-offs. To increase performance, you will necessarily trade something else off, e.g. comfort, reliability, durability, practicality, etc.

Personally I dont think you will better the OEM set up for suspension. Fitting harder springs and shock will just make the car handle better on a track , but compromise the road performance by making it more unsettled over uneven surfaces , or bottom out over speed bumps. remeber the boxster is held as one of the best handling cars of all time, I doubt you can "out drive" the handling capabilities on a public road. Performance HP you can get a chip upgrade, performance headers and exhaust ,afte that you are into turbo or supercharging , and would be better upgrading to the 3.4s.

I think the suspension is very good in it's stock form. If you want some more power (btw, is it a 2.7 or a 3.4?) you'll have to reach deep into your pocket. Engine and ECU swap are the best (and costliest) options I guess. Dropping in a 3.8 costs 18.5k EUR here and gives 370HP, or you may go the forced induction route as mentioned above...
