Removal of Manual rack under dash

Recommended Posts

Do you any of you know what kind of fasteners are holding this rack in place? I looked in with amirror and there is no tool that can be used. How is it removed?

Thanks, Bob

Bob, is this the plastic thingy that sits just above your knees under the dash - if so there are 4 screws that attach it to the dash, they are located into plastic push in type pieces, the screws go through the middle of the plastic push ins and expand the plastic like a wall plug.

Hope that all made sense - **** this Jack Daniels (the **** part only said d.a.m.n why blank this out?)

If anyone cares. The first year Boxster (1997) did not have the map holder as that started in 1998. Then it went away in 2003 when the glove box came out.

There are 2 plastic rivets. In the middle of the rivet is a pin. You get a small round tool like the end of a drill bit and push the pin out.

This picture shows a plastic rivet, but the pin has not been pushed in to lock the rivet in place. Your pin will be flush with the head of the rivet and the pin is hard to see for that reason. You cannot pull the pin out so you push it through the body of the rivet.

Quite easy to remove, as Tool Pants stated. Removal was one of the first "mods" I made to my '02 S. In fact, I placed the plastic rivets back in the holes for a very clean look (if you happen to be looking under the dash).

Thanks.... Looks good.

Off-topic Q, but since you have an '02, what color are the plastic grill inserts on the front of your Boxter? The '01s are silver, and I think they'd look a whole lot better in flat/satin black.

Mine are also a shade of silver, which is a nice contrast since my car is black. I also painted the side inner vents arctic silver to match.
