Help reading engine codes!

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have an 02 911 Cabrio and the CEL just came on today. I had an old cable from my old VW GTI that I used to use with Vagcom so I thought I could use that cable with the "Car Code OBD-2" software.

I simply downloaded that software, plugged it into my cable and to the car. The program just gets stuck on 'checking for interfaces...' and hangs. Nothing happens. I left it for a few mins and not even an error.

I have a strong suspicion it might be the cable but I think my cable works with ISO 9141 which is I believe the protocol for Porsches. The link to the cable I bought is here: http://ucables.com/ref/OBD2-KKL

Any ideas what's going on? Is there some setting in the software I need to change or do you think it's the cable?

It's probably your cable. You should buy the correct cable from http://www.obd-2.com.

you're probably right. Well i couldnt wait so i just went to autozone and borrowed their reader. Found P2096 and was even able to reset it...pretty easy and painless...now just gotta figure out what this code means and if i need to worry about it.

P2096 Signal Delay Time for Oxygen Sensor Ageing - Above Limit

Possible fault cause:

- Oxygen sensor

I would wait and see if before replacing the sensor.

OK...so it sounds like you're recommending to wait and see if the CEL light comes on again with this code. If it does, I'll probably clean the sensor as I've been reading on the forum although I don't even know where these sensors are :) If you have a pointer to a link on how to do that, that'd be great. I will double check the FAQs also.

Btw - my error said something about bank 1 system is too lean...is that just an interpretation of the code by the scanner I was using?

There are two sensors on each engine bank. One before the cat and one after.

If your car has 60,000 miles or more I would not waste timing trying to clean the sensor - since it has likely reached it's life expectancy.

My code interpretations come from Porsche's OBD II manual.

Gotcha - i've only got 30K so i hope this was just a fluke....
