Potential 996 purchase

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to purchase my 4th Porsche. My latest have been a 98 Boxster and a 2000 996. I'm looking at an 2003 996 w/tiptronic and about 27K on the clock. I know about the RMS on the manual trannys as the Boxster and the 996 I previously owned had the issue. Do the cars with Tiptronic have them as well?

The Rear Main Seal is a part of the engine, not a part of the transmission, so there will be no difference as the engines for manual transmissions are the same as those for automatics. The RMS is a seal between the crankshaft and the engine case, not between the engine and the trannies.

Regards, Maurice.

By 2003, it seems that the frequency of RMS problems was reduced. I have never heard of any claims that the type of transmission makes any difference. Some have claimed that the RMS is more frequent in cars that are driven less....but I don't know that there is any solid evidence to support that. It's not wildly expensive to repair and is covered by most extended warranties. Other issues related to how well the car has been treated will probably make a bigger difference in the car's dependability & cost of ownership.

Actually I remember reading that Tiptronics have a lot less issues with the RMS because the shaft is more supported in the tip's gearbox or something....
