Size/wattage of base HiFi Door Speakers in 996

Recommended Posts

I have a MY99 996 with the CDR220 head unit. The door speakers sound damaged and I want to replace them. I am looking for 5.25" replacement speakers but need to know two things:

1) What is the current size, namely depth, of the base speakers?

2) What wattage does the CDR220 send to these speakers?

Thanks in advance.

I think 2 ohm.

Do you want another set of factory ones. If so let me know and I will look around to see if I still have them.

C2 Cab,

I have the Bose package in my C2 Cab and they sound "damaged" too. I had them checked out and I'm afraid that that's as good as they're ever going to sound. I am finally going down the slippery slope of an aftermarket system since I just can't stand the way the factory Bose system sounds anymore. If I were going to go through all the trouble of taking the door panel off then I would put a better speaker in there and Dynamat the whole thing. I'm going to pull out everything including the footwell sub, door/dash/rear speakers, and head unit and just start over. It doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg if you don't mind some used amps and do some of the fab yourself.

Realistically, I wouldn't pay a nickel for the factory stuff. I'm just going to be happy not to be embarrassed anymore...

Good luck!

Tonger,

did 99's even come with a footwell sub or any sub at all?

i have the same Hi-Fi option with DSP in my car but there's no subwoofer unless i overlooked something...or it has the worlds greatest stealth device. Can you post a pic up please?

I have the HI-FI package in my 99. Only came with speakers in the doors. The sound is quite bad but not as bad as my first 996 which only had the 4 inch speakers in the dash and rear-side panels.

As I recall, the 99's didn't come with Subs. Only the bose optioned cars did which came later in the 996 series.

how big can i go with the doors/dash pods/rear pods without having to do some major work?

5.25" doors?

1" tweeters and 4" drivers for the pods?

RDS - thanks for the offer, but I think I will upgrade the speakers with a different brand.

Tonger - I had the same thought. I really like the stock look and am not psyched about replacing the head unit as a result. I have a Honda Accord that I drive when the weather is bad and I replaced the stock speakers there. The difference was amazing with a basic stock Honda CD player. The CDR220 is clearly a better radio so I expect to see a significant improvement.

I believe that is correct. IIRC there is a guy Rod at caraudioinovations.com that can put a slightly larger speaker in the door but don't quote me on that. When I was researching options, I remember coming across some work he had done and I believe he put a slightly larger speaker in the doors.

Think good options would be:

MB Quart, Morel and Focal, on the lower end of the spectrum (money wise) JL Audio or Boston Acoustics.

There is a rumor that MB Quart was purchased by another company and the newer models are not as good as the older ones.

Just my $0.02.
