secondary air system

Recommended Posts

Has anyone changed out the valves in the secondary air system. I am having trouble passing inspection due to a fault code:0420 Secondary air system. I have read that the valves in this system go bad at 100,000 miles and need to be replaced. I have done a number of repairs on this car and always used the instructions i got on this website. Here's hoping someone has done this one and can guide me through it.

P0420 Catalytic Converter Conversion Too Low (Cylinders 1 - 3)

Potential causes:

Bad Three Way Converter (cat)

You did not read that here. That is not true.

Loren:

You are right. I did not read the secondary air system valves failure message here. Got that on one PPBB.

I also got the error codes mixed up. I was the lucky winner of two codes, 0420 Cat efficiency below threshold (bank1), and 0410 secondary air system malfunction.

do you have any ideas on how to remedy the 0410 malfunction? I have inspected all hoses for leaks and crimps and found none. I removed the output hose from the air pump and blew out the line and pump chamber. When i turn on the ignition on a cold engine, the pump does not come on and I hear a buzzing noise coming from under the intake manifold on the passenger side. After looking at the exploded view, my guess is the electric change over valve has gone south, but that is just a guess. Any insight you have on my little problem will be greatly appreciated.

P0410 Secondary Air Injection System - Signal Implausible (Cylinders 1 - 3)

but no P1411? usually you get both together.

Potential causes:

Secondary air injection pump does not work.

Air supply lines restricted.

Electric change-over valve does not work.

Air change-over valve does not work.

Vacuum system leaks.

Possible fault areas:

- Relay

- DME control module

- Air supply lines

- Secondary air injection pump

- Electric change-over valve

- Air change-over valve

Loren,

Thanks for the reply. I think i have addressed the restricted air lines. I will do a vacuum test tonight. After that I'm not sure where to go. I hate to throw parts at this machine hoping for a good result.

I have been considering buying the Durametric OBD software, do you know if this software has the capability of detailing the fault in this system or do I need the PST-II?

Can you tell me where the relay you refer to is located?

Thanks for your assistance.

Jim
