Trip computer question

I just got my 01 Boxster S and it does not have the trip computer. I read somewhere that all Boxsters came with the actual electronics for the trip computer but that the stalk which activates it was optional. I have two questions. First of all does anyone know if there is a way to retrofit the stalk into an existing car which did not come with the option? The second question if if there is any way to get the external temperature to display without the stalk? Thanks for any and all help.
