car thinks key is still in the ignition

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I just got my 1999 996 c2 coupe, manual 6 speed, 60,000 mi back from an independent shop for the 60k maitenance. When I parked the car and went to turn the key to 0 position, I got pressure pushing back that wanted to stay some where between the 0 and 1 position. I can push pass the pressure and remove the key, but the loud gong sound comes on like when you open the door and still have the key in the ignition. I put the key back in and jiggled it around to try to trip any sensor, but the car doesn't recognize anything. Also the ignition still seems to want to be in that 1/2 position. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Ed

I found the posted topics on replacing the ignition switch, this seems to be my problem, right?

Ed:

Replacing the electrical portion of the ignition switch (with Audi Part # 4A0-905-849- B ) will definitely fix the problem you are describing.

It's an easy job if you have contortionist skills and a VERY small scredriver. Check out Mike Focke's Boxster Pages for a good DIY.

Regards, Maurice.
