MY2004 Cayenne V6 Trip Transmission issue

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, what do you think:

Vehicle: 2004 Cayenne V6 Trip 37k miles, unfortunately out of warranty (vehicle was not operated for about 6 months)

Symptoms: when in 5th gear and driving 40-46 mph and gas is fully derpessed to force down shift, there is a Hard shift and shuddering. Also whne slowly deaccelerating in fifth gear, immediately when you hit 25mph and it drops in 4th you get a hard shift - no shuddering. no harsh shifting with PSM off or with 'normal driving'.

Recomendations: Control unit? Valve Body? My Durametric tool is on the way, any specific codes to look for that could help decide. Can anyone provide experience with either a control unit or valve body replacement.

thanks much for all inputs.

Almost definitely the valve body. Shifting problems with the 4 - 5 and the 5 - 4 shifts are known to be caused by failing valve bodies. When this happens they don't set faults - you just feel it when you're driving. I hope you have an extended warranty... these are a bit.... pricey.

Thanks, that looks like it is it - a local transmission expert helped determine it. Now I have to drive it over to the dealer for the quote, has anyone had it done - how much did it cost you? It sounds pretty common because the service guy said he has plenty of valve bodies in stock and moves them. No extended and it sure sucks that a 35k premium automobile should need one...

Any news on this? I also have the dreaded bang when shifting.. they want me to replace the valve body. However, there is no way to determine if its the valve body or a bad transmission. So I have to shell out around $2,000 to replace a possible valve body, and if that doesn't fix it then have to shell out another $6-8K on a tranny. WTF is up w/ a car retailing over $100K and needing this to be replaced. I have a '04 Cayenne Turbo.

Just had this done on my 04 CTT with 80k miles. Same symptoms, harsh 4-5 shift. Had the valve body and transmission control unit replaced for about $3400. Thankfully I bought a warranty with the car so it was mostly covered. :)
