Boxter 2,5 DME 996.618.601.02

Recommended Posts

Gentlemen and Ladies,

I can, for the life of me, not find any information on if I (or somebody with a programming tool) can re-programme my Boxster's DME Part number: 996.618.601.02, for a 1998, 996 3.4 engine.

The 3.4 engine is for sale and I would love to install this engine into my Boxster. I know that the 3.4 engine has the DME: 996.618.601.04.

In South Africa the dealers and mechanics are very reluctant to help in this regard unless you commit for them to do the swap.

I searched RennTech (and the internet) and could only find that somewhere, somebody mentioned that they are not sure if the DME part number ending with the .02 can be re-programmed.

Please, any direction on where I can find information will be dearly appreciated.

Regards

Pieter

Pieter,

The DME's all have 996 numbers and are all "uncoded" when they are manufactured. The .01, .02, etc., at the end of the part number refers to the current manufacturing or modification status. I think that you will have no problems re-coding your 986 DME to that of a 996 DME. I would try to stay with he 996.618.601.xx series DME's because they are common to non e-gas engines. Fellow board member, Todd Holyoak (tholyoak) is a good source of information about engine swaos/DME coding. Start here:

Hi Bill,

Thank you VERY much for your reply. I have studied Todd's swap in detail and that is exactly what I want to do. It seems that all swaps are from MY98 up and none for the MY97. I was just alarmed by somebody saying that the .02 was not re-programmable... did'nt make sense to me that my DME was not programmable while all the other's were. I understand that I must stay within the same base DME. (The part number of DME of the engine that I can get is 996.618.601.04)

So the .04 is just a little "newer" than the .02?

Thank you much again.

Pieter

PS. my Boxter has a 5 speed and not 6 speed as mentioned in my previous post...

Hi Bill,

Oops, I have just read in Todds write-up:"some MY97 DME's cannot be re-programmed"......

Worst case scenario is then:

1) Extract my cars security codes from the existing DME, or get the codes from Porsche AG.

2) Get the 996 (.04) DME and programme it with my car's secrity codes.

Is my assumptions correct?

Regards

Pieter

If you replace the DME with a new or used DME it will need to be reprogrammed. You will need your IPAS (security codes) and it is best to copy some information from the old DME first.

Program the engine profile, immobilizer, radio (if needed), and certain other options depending on the model year.

Find someone that knows how to do this for your car.
