Carrera 3.2 will not idle

My 1984 Carrera 3.2 suddenly will not idle. The engine still pulls strongly through all the gears but when you come to a stop the rev counter drops like a stone and the engine dies. It starts again easily but refuses to idle. After doing a bit of research on the net, I suspect it may be a problem with the idle air control valve, but with the ignition on I can feel a slight vibration when I touch the control valve, so it seems like it is still alive. If I disconnect the electrical plug to the valve the car starts fine and does idle but it hunts badly. If I reconnect the electrical plug and start the car the engine cuts out once again. I am hoping that someone can confirm my theory before I order a new control valve.

Even though it is still buzzing it might not be working correctly, as Loren said it's best to replace it and also clean the throttle body plate. I assume basic things are in good order like the air filter element.

Yes, have checked everything else I can think of including vacuum pipes. Will let you know what transpires.
