CEL comes on and then off after a couple weeks?

Normal - no, but it can happen.

If the problem that caused the CEL gets corrected and it stays corrected for a certain number of drive cycles then it clears the light.

Since this is re-occurring I suggest you find someone with a PST2 or PIWIS tester and have them look for "pending fault codes". This will give a clue to cause(s) of the problem.
