BMW guy workin on a Boxster with issues....Please help me

Recommended Posts

I am workin on a 02 Boxster with 110k on it. This thing is throwin me for a loop. The car pop and pings at idle I replaced the plugs and it is throwing a ton of missfires and has a horrible idle however when you rev it up it is very smooth. I have researched this and it seems to me that the coil packs maybe cracked? Any suggestions on that would be helpful. Issue number two. I believe is the AOS. It smokes on startup then goes away. Issue number three. Idle surge this thing will sometimes surge at idle. It threw me the code for the Throttle motor a couple times. What I have done so far is all new plugs and a new Mass Air Meter I also took the throttle body off the car and cleaned it. Any suggestions would be great because this thing obviously needs help. Like I said it has a rough idle (until it warms up) and sometimes it dies at idle. What i was thinking is new coil packs and possibly new throttle motor along with the new AOS. Thank you in advance for your help and suggestions. Mike :)

Do a search here on coil packs. It will give you a good idea on what to look for when you inspect them. If they are the original packs they most likely need to be replaced. Also you may need to hook up a Porsche tester PIWIS to see if it's throwing any other codes.

An AOS on a Boxster is an easy DIY. Do a search here on that as well.

Clean your throttle body and Idle valve if it's non e-gas. (search here as well)

I'm sure others will chime in and help you with more ideas.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the reply's and the hearty welcome. I have a generic OBD2 scanner and i read the codes but I'm at work and can't remember them. I will search for the items you listed Phillip. I believe the Coil Packs are the Orginals. This car has had a hard life no maintenance done on it at all expect the oil changes. And who ever owned it must have had a 20 mile dirt road ride to work. Its a shame people don't take care of their cars. Thanks again and keep the suggestions coming. Mike
