1999 996 Convertible top will not open

Recommended Posts

I've checked the basics.....lid is shut, brake is on...etc. Here's what it's doing.

First sign of issue: It came down kind of slow and sloppy.

Second sign of issue: It came down with a jolting motion…..move-stop-move-stop-move-stop….etc

Third sign of issue: It came down with a jolting motion and stopped half way.

Fourth sign of issue: The back of the car opens and the top unlatches but doesn't move at all.

Right now the back opens and it unlatches but doesn't move. I "can" hear the motor trying.

During all of this the top will close with no issues.

Any thoughts? If you have a diagram, I may be able to open it up and see if it's off a track or something.

Thanks for any help.

weak battery?

weak power connection? (I had the connection to the engine loose)

weak gnd connection? (mine was a loose/rusted connection under the

I had something like this happen when I was working on one of my Boxsters -- all of the above was occurring and

had similar symptoms.

All the loose connections on my part were due to me working on things in progress -- not caused by normal activity.

If I want to check/refill the fluid on the hydraulic convertible top, is there a way to manually drop the top on a 1999 996 cabriolet? I may not be able to open it for the service.

Yes, there are instructions for manually opening and closing the top in your user manual, but if you do so, you'll need to have it recalibrated with a Porsche PST-2 or Durametric tool before attempting to operate it again.

However, if it's currently closed, you can most likely get it into service position without any trouble. Once it unlatches and the deck lid has moved to the open position, you can reach in and unhook the tension cables, then fold the window section of the top forward to access the area behind the seat.
