Cost to replace RMS, LNE IMS retrofit, and new clutch

Recommended Posts

I will be taking care of a what appears to be small RMS oil leak, replacing the clutch, and while we're in there doing the LNE IMS retrofit this spring. 23K miles on the clock.

I was quoted $3K by a Porsche dealer in Chicago that I was referred to by Charles at LNE. They have done several there and I like that for piece of mind.

Is $3K in the ball park?

What year car? I did mine last fall on a 2001 996 3.4. The job entailed removing the tranny etc and also locking the cams at TDC. I did not replace the clutch as it was a year and 2,00 miles old, I did the LNE upgrade. Parts $650 for the kit, $85 for the tranny bushing and labor totaled $2k with a tranny flush and refill, oil change and tranny suport bushing replacement. If the mechanic has done these before, it should take 4 hrs at best to do the upgrade, clutch, tranny in and out, about 8 hrs. total should be 12 hours.

$3K seems a bit high but not for a dealer.

With the tranny out, have then check the bearing for excess radial and axial play. At 23 K miles I would think the bearing should bo OK, mine had 94,500 miles and lots of play.

Good luck.

$3K is in the ballpark if it includes all the parts and an oil change. Are they figuring 8 -10 hours of labor or more? Taking the trans down is a major pain ( Tips even worse). But once that's accomplished.. the clutch, IMS, RMS are right there...an indy with his own shop may save you a few hundred, but you've got to see his work first....Since Charles recommended this shop, that's a plus. GL, I know I'm alot happier knowing I did the RMS //IMS retrofit before it did me.... B)

I have an '03 C4S w/ ~22,000 miles on the clock and I was quoted "Total price for the IMS Retrofit procedure which also includes a new rear main seal, clutch and pressure plate is $3900 for 4wd cars."

I think non AWD P Cars are cheaper.

Sounds fair to me. And Charles' recommendation would seal the deal. You do not want just anybody doing the IMS upgrade.

I agree with you 70Sixter and 2000996MIA. I think I will fix the RMS leak as it is for sure leaking slightly and while they are in there have them analyze the condition of the clutch and IMS rather than just blindly ordering up all 3 just because the tranny is down. I am usually an advocate of "if it's not broke don't fix it school" but with the IMS seal this could go from not broke to destroying the engine.

I'm not going to hesitate putting $3K into the car as it runs real strong and is in near mint condition.

In the meantime, I'll keep lurking and posting on the various forums until around mid to late April when the car comes out of storage and it will be time to schedule an appointment for service.

Thanks everybody for your input.
