Ignition Switch gets stuck when switching to off, dash lights stay on

Recommended Posts

99 Boxster 51,000 miles

After putting the key in the ignition the other day and starting the Boxster, turning the key on didn't feel right. On the way home I noticed the lights did not come on, and when I get in the garage, the key was hard to turn back to the off position. Pulled the keys out and the car thinks the key is still in it... dash lights stay on, radio stays on. Also, now the key does not like to slide in or come out sometimes... I sprayed a little WD-40 to help... it did but still the same issue. The key just does not turn well like there is something wrapped around it not letting it turn.

I tried to take the ignition switch out today to clean it hoping it is something simple with the cylinder and tumblers. Cannot figure out how to take the cylinder out... not to mention taking the whole switch out.

I did a search and found out how to take the panel with the light switch out... could have used that earlier... but nothing on the switch removal.

The culprit is in first place the electric part of the switch, please do a search, this issue has been discussed many times.

As I put in my post, I already did a search. I used the term Ignition Switch... is there another term I should be searching under?
