Just wondering if anyone out there has a fuel cap that locks properly. My 2001 996 C2 has relatively low miles (34K) and the locking mechanism isn't locking properly. All the moving parts seem to be functioning and it appears all the necessary pieces are intact. The pin moves in and out far enough but it misses the small plastic loop fastened to the cap. It appears to be a poor design but that is just my opinion. Trying to decide if it's worth tearing apart the wheel well area to investigate further, but it looks like all is ok except for the pin not guiding into the plastic loop. Thanks for any help.

No Loren. The black plastic loop that the pin should seat in is there and appears to be solidly mounted on the fuel door. When locking the car with the remote key the pin seems to travel far enough to fit into the plastic loop, but I can still open the fuel door because the pin is missing the loop for some reason when it fully extends. Maybe it is not aligning correctly into the plastic loop. I have tested it with the door open and can see the plastic pin travel in and out maybe an inch or more, but after I close the fuel door I can't see what is going on.

Thanks for your reply.

No sure. Gotta take a close look at the guide. I do remember seeing a black plastic fixture there but I need to check out the position it is in. Can this guide piece be purchased separately or does it only come in a kit? Your pics are excellent. I need to take a pic of mine and compare it to your illustrations. I am thinking the rose is missing but now that I know where to start, I need to take a closer look at the rose guide area. Gonna tackle that challenge in the morning.

Thanks again!

Thank you Loren. The rose is missing. The plastic pin has enough travel, but without the rose piece to guide it, it is not seating in the plastic loop piece mounted on the fuel door. Does the rose just snap into place where the plastic pin ejects from or is it a more complicated fix? I'm going to try and get the part number and see how difficult it is to install.

Thanks again.
