Adjusting the Shift Mechanism - Tools? DYI

Recommended Posts

The part number for the orange tool is shown in post #4. I have also seen a white version. Both are the same except for the color.

They work on all 986/996 with the original shift lever.

Is there also a tool to align the short shifter (Part Number would also be useful) for a 2004 Boxster S and is this tool also good for a 996 C2 ?

The orange tool will fit on all 986/996 with the orignial shift lever. So if the car is a 2004 S or a C2 with the original shift lever, it will fit.

But, the orange tool will not fit on the B&M/Porsche style short shift lever as that lever is fatter than the original shift lever.

In your original instructions you said to remove the center console. Is that necessary to check alignment, to adjust cables, both, or neither?

(It looks from your latest picture that it is possible to snap the clip on with the center console in place)

Hi, Stefan. I have the white tool and it will snap into place to check the adjustment without removing the console. Only the boot has to be lifted. The console will have to be removed to adjust the cables, if required. I have a 2002 6-speed with the stock shifter.

Once you have the console and all apart you might as well change out the plastic cable end and replace it with an aluminum one. It will save you from doing all this again in the future. These things have a history of breaking at inopportune times.

Hi, I'm a newb to this forum and I would like to work on my first DIY task to adjust my shifter alignment. When I shift 1-2, it jumps out of gear once in a while or notche. When the car is warm, I'm even having hard time getting into reverse gear, it sometimes gets in 1st gear at reverse position; I have to push to the left really really hard while puting into reverse position to put in reverse gear.

I would like to know where you can order the tool? And approx. how much? I'm located in B.C. Canada.

Thanks in advance.
