I've decided to tae the plunge and start doing most of the minor work by myself. What tools will be needed (sockets, screwdrivers etc etc...) to do most of the work properly. I'm sure there's probably some stuff I don't have and I hate being stuck in the middle of a job because i don't have the right tools.

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Metric sockets, wrenches, torx bits, hex bits. 1/2", 3/8" torque wrenches. Oil filter removal tool. Floor jack. Usual assortment of screwdrivers, pliers.

Get a copy of the shop manual or look at the DIY that are archived here and read through the procedures that you want to do and note what tools are listed.
