Steering Rack Replacement

Recommended Posts

I have a 2000 996 C2, 6 speed, 90k miles. I just finished inspecting the front end of the car looking for the source of a fluid leak. Sure enough the drivers side end of the steering rack is leaking. Does anyone have a DIY guide for replacement of the steering rack? Also, Pelican seems to have the lowest price on the rack at $774 - anyone find a TRW rack any cheaper than that?

Try some of the wreckers for a used one. Also do a search on eBay for both used and re manufactured ones. There are several listed at this time for less than $400. If you are reluctant to use eBay go directly to one of the companies that re-manufacture the units.

FWIW...page 109 of the latest issue of Panorama (Feb 2011) has an advertisement for a company that apparently has remanufactured steering racks for the 996 for $450. I happened to be reading it this morning :-)

Outstanding. Next best options was new from Pelican at $774. Thanks a bunch!

Still looking for any advice on changing the rack, but the factory manual has a decent procedure. Sounds like a project for Saturday!

BTW its Zimm's Autotech with the rebuilt rack. I think I will go this route rather than used or new and give it a go. I used to buy all my 914 stuff from them, glad they are still around.

  • 2 weeks later...

Ended up finding Jorgan Automotive in Ann Arbor Michigan. Rebuilt my rack in one day, sent it back to me with new boots, clips, and Loctite for the tie rod connections. Also give lifetime warranty - all for $300!!

So I highly recommend them

Wow - lifetime warranty. Sounds like a good deal.

I just bought a new rack from Pelican for 775 believing that rebuilds were not usually successful. Just today I was looking at the $400 rebuilds in the back of Excellence wondering if I spent $300 extra unnecessarily.

As far as the install goes...I read the factory procedure and it all looked pretty straightforward. I even had it up on stands and dropped the belly pan for an inspection. It looks very do-able, but a pain in the arse without a hoist.

I ended up paying my indy 3 hours to do the job. I figured it had to go in to the shop anyway to have the toe set up. He also had to fire up the PWIS to set the steering angle which is something you can't do at home. Note that if the steering angle is screwed up even one tooth the ABS and PSM get all freaked out.

Just got the car back Friday in fact.
