Need Help! Coolant leak 99 Boxster.

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. Need some help on a coolant leak. I came out to the garage today and there was a puddle going from under the rear passenger tire draining back. I started the car and could see it coming out from the location I'm pointing to in the picture. Is it a lose or bad hose? I pulled the carpet to check around the expansion tank and it was totally dry. Thanks for any help.

Update- I put some more coolant in it and left the cap off for about 5 minutes while idling. I'm thinking maybe there was air in the system. When the radiator fan kicked on I noticed only the right side radiator is working. If the left one is clogged could it backing up causing this leak? Thanks for any help anyone might have.

Thanks Iogray for the suggestions. I found the bleeding instructions, but I believe mine is different because it's a tiptronic. I'm positive it's anti-freeze. What's with the left front fan not coming on? I'm fairly certain that it is related.

It could be one of three things. leaking hose (daubt it) cracked tank or the radiator caps have a known issue. look at the part number on the cap if it ends with an 04 you are good if not, replace your cap they are only about $ 12

If its not your cap then look for a cracked tank by pulling the carpet out of your trunk and inspection or removing tank and inspecting. BTW when the caps leak there is a drain tube under the plastic cover under you fill cap that exits out in front of the rear wheel. then check you fuses and relays for your other fan.

Nevermind, I pulled the carpet again and this time pulled the black protective stuff up too, and sure enough it was slightly wet. I felt around on the bottom of the tank and It felt damp. I guess my final question is this. Would a leaking tank explain the large loss of coolant up by the right rear passenger tire? I sure hope there is nothing else going on.

The left front fan issue may be caused by a failed resister. Does the fan operate on high when you have A/C selected ON? If so, the resister in the power circuit has probably failed. If the left front fan doesn't operate with the A/C selected ON, the fan motor itself may have failed. There is quite a lot of information available here on RennTech through the search function.
