Battery overflow hose. Original factory battery and Porche replacement batteries will have a place it plugs into. Some aftermarket batteries have a place, but it does not always fit the factory fitting. On my 996, I don't use it as my aftermarket battery does not have a place for it.

Any battery inside of a compartment should have a vent hose.

If your battery does not have a vent hose option on it - then it is the wrong battery.

Most all of the battery manufacturers make a vent for their 48 series batteries - but sometime you have to ask them for it.

The vent hose allows a place for the highly explosive hydrogen ( by-product of acid eating lead) to escape. The hydrogen can cause corrosion of metal in the area and could explode with spark if conditions are right. The chances are small but if you've ever experienced a battery explode it is not pretty. Listen to Loren.
