1999 996 Carrera Clamshell

Recommended Posts

I have a little problem with my clamshell. It is stuck in the open position. The canvas portion of the top opens and closes correctly. I do hear some motion or clicking for about three seconds or so when I hold the open or close button down. It seems to be coming from what looks like the long box in front of the hydrolic box. I have the cover off and can get at everything. Suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Update...

I had my son press te close top button and I was in back and helped the clamshell close. It did with my help and then I opened the whole thing te right way and the clamshell opened but still would not close on the button operated close cycle. Thoughts?

Ok I have taken apart the clamshell gear drive box and it is fine in the center teeth and on both sides. Cords move well when ratched by hand. I plugged in the clamshell motor and had someone operate the top and the motor for the shell operates in forward and reverse when the canvas top operates. Remember it is only my clamshell that is not closing. The rag top works. Three possibilities.

1. The micro switch for the clamshell lock. Not sure because it opens but doesn't close.

2. The top needs calibration

3. Or this....... I noticed the hydro fluid in the jar is only about a 1/4 inch deep . The rag top works but I don't know if this ties in with the electronic operation of the clamshell even though the rag top is working.

Thoughts?

Perhaps tighten the portion on the clamshell motor that it a clutch to the clamshell. Accessable behind rear seats. Shouldn't be so tight that system binds or so loose that doesn't grab. I forget the exact number of turns.

Can you tell if the clamshell motor is "requested" to close the shell? If not then perhaps the canvas hook sensor isn't activating. Common problem, search a thread I did on repairing top opperation. Threw in a few pics of my issues, I had like 3-4 on my 1999.

Ok I got the clamshell working! It was the potentiometer the adjustment was too far down from some previous person.I backed it out so that it would not disengage so far from the inner spring movement.I did notice that the white nylon piece was cracked inside the meter and that did not help but it is working. Now for the rest. Of course now that the clam is working the rag top stopped. I added fluid and closed the screw per instructions but it started to work and stopped. It is stopped in the closed position but the top latch works and opens and closes. It's just that the rag top will not move now. I hold down the button and the top warning light flashes. I don't have any electronic testing equipment. Need some advice here. Ho can I test the multi switches in a simple manner. What should I look for?

Reset opportunity?
