Hi all.

Just joined and I'm afraid my first question is a boring RMS one(sorry)

My car a 1999 C4 - (50k miles) has been leaking small amounts of oil in recent weeks. Whilst in for its MOT I asked the guys (independents) to take a look. Anyway suprise suprise its the RMS. :help:

What is the prodedure for doing this? The guys with the car say its engine out (a day total?) - whilst another independent tells me a gearbox out job (circa 5hrs labour total)

I also don't want to go tomorrow proclaiming that they are wrong and it is only a box out job not engine???

Thanks in advance.

You don't need to remove the engine - just the gearbox. Usually 4-5 hours labor. They should check and fix any other leaks (they see) while they are in there (i.e. intermediate shaft seal, exhaust gasket, cam cover leaks, etc.). Also they should change the case half bolts to the sealed type if they are not already.

Yeps it's usually 4 hours for us and james is really trying to find a better replacement seal than the standard one which hardens/cracks over time etc...
