987.1 Cruise control retro fit

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just need some clarification before i go through the process of getting parts to fit cruise control to my 2005 Boxster S 3.2 Manual.

Downloaded the guide available on here, great job by the way.

Part number for the cruise stalk is 997.613.261.0001C but during a search, i am coming up with what looks like the same item with part number 997.613.216.00, which states also fits 981.

Is it the same or is the missing 01C vital??

Another question, existing stalk for OBC is on left hand side and the part pictures show the cruise stalk as if fitted on the left also, can the stalk be fitted either side?

Thanks!

Great thanks for the information.

Would you know if a 981 Sports steering wheel will fit as a direct replacement, I'm aware i would have to change the airbag to the round version as current the wheel is the triangle airbag type.

If I remember correctly, fitting a 981 wheel & airbag on a 987.1 causes a problem with the horn.  The 981 uses a hall-effect switch for the horn contact, and it operaties in the opposite sense to the 987.1.  (Normally closed instead of normally open, or vice-versa). To make it work, I think you have to remove the airbag casing and turn the magnet over, making it work in the same sense as the 987.1.  I think you can also get round this by fitting a 987.2 steering column control unit, but it is a more expensive solution.  Fitting a 981 wheel to a 987.2 isn't a problem, which is what I did on mine.

As for the cruise stalk, the 981 stalk is completely different, and won't fit a 987.  Unfortunately, UK dismantlers know what Porsche charge for the stalk, and charge a lot for them.  You are best trawling the US eBay site, as cruise was fitted as standard to US cars, hence dismantlers don't generally charge a premium.
