I have an ‘04 C4S Cabriolet and am doing an engine overhaul.  


I’m working on installing my new EPS IMS Bearing and it was smooth sailing up until now.  The new bearing isn’t seating properly and seems to have bottomed out but it’s not flush with the shaft.  As well as, I can’t seem to turn the center bolt eitherspacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.png.  Any ideas for how to remove it as my extraction kit doesn’t have the proper threads it seems on the extractor tools.

You are in an ugly position.  Are you sure the kit you have is for a single row application?  

 

If the bearing will not seat, and has to be subsequently extracted, normal procedure is to can the bearing and use a new one as the extraction process tends to damage the internal bearing cages, which would lead to a premature failure..  This is particularly bad for ball bearings, but I do not know about how bad it is for roller bearings as I am not particularly fond of the technical premise behind them, but the damage should be similar.  You might want to contact the company behind the kit and see what they have to say about reuse.

Just double checked and the kit is for the 996 single row replacement.  Right now I have about a $12k paperweight as i’m not able to even remove the new bearing.  The tool kit doesn’t seem to have the proper internal threads for the center bolt.

Where did you purchase the bearing and tool kit?  I would contact the vendor to have them advise you what to do.  Also, once the new bearing is extracted it is junk.  I know more money to throw at the project, but do yourself a favor and get the LN IMS Solution and be done with it forever.

(If possible) , I would fabricate 3 right angle brackets  to bolt into the bearing flange holes  protruding into the hole in order to support the IMS,  slide hammer the bearing  via the center bolt, ,and then, refer to the last part of DBJoe996 suggestion. Good luck

Yeah my plan is to forgo the sunk cost fallacy here and count it as about a $600 lesson learned in doing a better job of research on an important part - LNE bearing will be ordered soon.  I bought the EPS bearing and the tool kit is likely a second hand LNE tool kit which would explain why it doesn’t work on the bearing.  I found a thread adapter that fits both ends and will pull the now trashed bearing out with my tool kit.  Hopefully I didn’t do any damage with trying to hammer the EPS bearing in.
