996 Gauge Cluster

Recommended Posts

I have reading a lot, and some of you are a really knowledgeable guys.

I would like to get your comments about my problem in a 996 2001, Odometer LCD.

post-18991-1264370389_thumb.jpg

As you can see in the attached picture, my LCD is damaged, with a mark in the middle.

Is possible to get and buy that small LCD display (from a broken cluster), or will be needed to replace overall cluster ?

Thanks in advance

LLuis

Tarragona(Spain)

**It seems this is not the proper forum for that topic, if so, then please delete, and sorry.

I have the same LCD damage near the speedometer, the dealer quoted 1500.00 for a new cluster can anyone tell me if there is a fix for this or a common issue in my 99' 996 sorry for the post in this topic but don't see a reference to this issue anywhere else. Jay In So. Cal.

Almost all is well after a couple of weeks.

I have the Oil Pressure send on order from Suncoast. It should be here tomorrow.

The fuel gauge seems accurate but I am really afraid to let it get below 1/4.

I am still dealing with the problem of the Oil Check on the cluster complaining about not being level. sad.gif

I'm wondering if Dale Zelinsky found out what is the problem behind the car not being level.. I recently bought a 2002 GT2 and i'm having the same issue...

I got confused by the different combinations and permutations of MY and models. What 996 gauge cluster will wok with my 2004 986S?

6 speed, not tip. Plug and play electronically? I know the surround and dash cover differ.

Hello

I have a faulty 2001 996 Turbo Instrument cluster, EU spec, my car has manual transmission, it won't show the oil level, always giving the error message even though I have replaced the oil level sender. I have found a 2nd hand gauge cluster on ebay, the owner says it was removed from a 996 Turbo, but the part number says that it is a GT2 part. Do you know the difference between GT2 and Turbo gauge clusters? would it work on my EU spec car? I don't mind about the mph-kph or C-F differences. Thank you.

This article: http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Boxster_Tech/90-ELEC-996_Cluster/90-ELEC-996_Cluster.htm states that when swapping a 996 cluster into a Boxster, that "For the 2001-04 Boxster, you can use any non-Turbo 996 cluster from the years 2002-04."

This eems to say that there are differences between the Turbo clusters and those in other 996s.

In an effort to summarize what has been learned so far, Ill start with the Carrera instrument cluster itself. The assumption of the DIY is that the instrument cluster is fully functional. I have a concern with the instrument clusters found on the internet auction sites. Did the seller just decide one day that he didnt need the instrument cluster in his car? Or, is it available because it was removed from his car for cause? I would put more trust an established re-cyclers parts because the instrument cluster in the donor car was probably working properly before the accident and, given no physical damage to the instrument cluster, probably still does. I also have doubts about the viability of an instrument cluster that has had the part number and/or serial number removed.

Anyway, the basic MY02 MY04 Carrera instrument cluster is the same regardless of the car it is installed in. There are different part numbers for manual vs. Tiptronic and color coordination of the instrument faces to interior colors, but the instrument cluster is functionally the same whether it is installed in a C2, C4, Coupe, Targa, etc. Only the coding by a PST2 / PIWIS tailors the instrument cluster to the car. (Instrument clusters from Turbos are a different breed and should NOT be considered for a transplant.)

The ideal candidate for a transplant into an MY01 MY04 Boxster is a Carrera instrument cluster taken from an MY02 MY04 996 C2 Cabriolet. (Obviously, consideration has to be made for the type of transmission manual or Tiptronic.) This means that the instrument cluster is coded for the proper fuel tank/fuel quantity transmitter and the Convertible Top Warning Light. If the instrument cluster is taken from a Coupe (or Targa), the Convertible Top Warning Light will not illuminate when the Boxsters top cover isnt fully stowed. Some people can live with that anomaly. Likewise, if the instrument cluster is taken from an MY02 - My04 996 C4 Coupe (or Targa), the fuel quantity will be inaccurate. In order to make the instrument cluster operate completely, if not from a Cabriolet (or is from a C4) your car's DME will have to be temporarily re-coded. This is because the Carrera instrument cluster has to see a Carrera DME before it will allow its coding to be modified. (More on DMEs below.)

MY97 MY00 BOXSTERS. For RennTech members who have MY97-MY00 cars and who are contemplating installing a Carrera instrument cluster, the following might be of some assistance.

You must find a Carrera C2 instrument cluster. The C4 / C4S instrument clusters are physically (internally) different and there is no hope of getting the fuel gauge system to indicate fuel quantity accurately. I would also recommend looking for an instrument cluster from only MY00-MY01 Carreras. This is because the MY98 - MY99 Carreras use a different fuel quantity transmitter than your Boxster so a MY98 MY99 instrument cluster may not be compatible with your Boxsters fuel quantity transmitter. Also, a MY98 MY99 instrument cluster may not have provisions for the On Board Computer. Your ideal Carrera instrument cluster would be from a MY00 - MY01 C2 Cabriolet.

From the 2005 PET parts list, the following part numbers are representative of the MY00 MY01 Carrera instrument clusters that would be good candidates. These instrument clusters are matched to your Boxsters fuel quantity transmitter and have electronic mail which I would guess is Porsche parts manual speak for On Board Computer message display capability.

MY00 MY01 Carrera C2 6-Speed 996.641.105.02.70C

MY00 MY01 Carerra C2 Tiptronic 996.641.106.02.70C

MY00 MY01 Carrera C2 (GB) 6-Speed 996.641.107.02.70C

MY00 My01 Carrera C2 (GB) Tiptronic 996.641.108.02.70C

For reference, the MY98 MY99 Carrera C2 instrument cluster part numbers are the same as above except they are 996.641.###.01.70C.

DME CODING. A procedure has been used to successfully code a 986 DME as a 996, code the instrument cluster to C2 Cabriolet and finally recode the DME back to 986. I would strongly suggest that the person following this procedure be an experienced PST2 / PIWIS operator. There are several steps (key strokes) needed to accomplish the coding.

Hello all,

sorry to resurrect such an old thread! I have a MK2 996 Turbo cluster that I needed for parts (housing and stalks) can I plug it into my 2004 C2 manual to test its functionality? Am I risking damaging anything or overriding any settings etc in my C2?

Thanks!

In theory no as the clusters for those model years are very close.

But then your can will not have any input for the boost setting so it may be off or give erratic readings.

Thanks Loren. So I might be able to get at least a decent idea if it works or not? Even if the proper values (such as the tacho will be off as the redline is 6,500 vs 7,000) not that I will actually be using the cluster/driving with it. I would just like to know if it all works :)

Does the car itself mechanically behave strangely with the wrong cluster?

Thanks

Operationally it should not affect the car.

Just run it - most readings should work.

Fuel gauge will be off since Turbo has the split saddle bag fuel tank, boost will not register, and of course the gauges will have higher limits on the speedo and tach.

OBC should work if it is turned on in your car and you have the fourth steering wheel stalk.

Excellent, yes have the OBC on and I have the 4th stalk too :) so ill give it a go. I just need to know if eveything works

Another quick question, I bought the cluster knowing it had a bad oil pressure gauge, so I bought another one to replace it so it could be complete. However in transit the oil pressure gauge the needle was pushed up to just below 1. In your opinion would it now be broken or can I gently just push it back to 0? I will test it but I need to chase up with the seller and im not sure when ill get the change to plug it in and actually test it.

Thanks!

Actually while we are on the topic, anyone have any tricks to remove the stalk endings without breaking the stalk? The time adjust stalk ending is stuck on really tight and I dont want to break the stalk! The one in my car just slides off, this one on my spare wont budge!

Okay guys need a little bit of help please!

Was able to get the stalk ending off (was on there quite tight and I didnt want to break the stalk). So far I have removed the 2 screws in the back and the 2 clips on the sides.

When I try and open up the cluster I release the two tabs on the bottom and it starts to come apart but it seems like its getting caught at the top of the tacho??

I know there is a clip there but any tips on how to open it up? Have I missed a clip/screw??

Thanks

It sounds like you were following the proper work procedure.  If I recall correctly, I removed 2 torx screws.  Then I pushed the two clips on the back towards the outside of the cluster. (This might seem a little scary at first as it feels as if they will break, but it disengages the electrical plugs that connect the two boards together.  I may not have pushed them all the way apart on my first try.) Then I unclipped the large clip from the bottom of the cluster and it should fell easily into two halves.

You can see some photos of disassembled gauge clusters here: http://986forum.com/forums/general-discussions/43017-carrera-gauge-swap.html and here: http://rennlist.com/forums/boxster-and-boxster-s-986-forum/915925-programming-a-996-cluster-to-work-in-a-986-a.html
