Checking my oil the other day I noticed that it was down a quart. For some reason I can't seem to find 10w40 synthetic which is in my 2000 C4 now. Anyone have any views on adding a quart of 5w30?

I I think that is 0-W40 a Mobil 1 product, Look at AutoZone, sometimes they are out of it. When I see it I usually by enough to do 2 oil changes.

Now concerning the QT low always verify the oil while the car is cold or not be driven for awhile, check the dip stick vs. the Dash guage. Both should match. Ive noticed the guage indicating lower than the stick on occusation.

I wouldnt mix oil jut for 1 qt low , I would go find the right oil. Just me.

One quart out of nine is not going to change the overall viscosity very much. Assuming you are changing the oil every 5000 to 7500 miles and you are only having to add 1 to 2 quarts in between, it is not a big deal to mix viscosities. IMHO

(By some people's theories, the fact that you are adding a little fresh oil every now and then, actually improves the overall quality of the oil.)

In part it will depend on how you drive the car. Leisurely, no big deal. Track it every day, bigger deal.
