GT3 MK1 Comfort

New to this forum, I am the proud owner of a GT3 mk1. I just wondered if any of you out there have experienced the same problem as I have. When starting from cold there is a loud rattle from the left hand side of the engine until the oil light goes out, had a similar problem with my 993 which was rectified by changing the cam chain tensioners does the GT3 suffer in the same way? Also there is a slight oil leak from the cam chain cover on the same side of the engine. The car has done 28k miles.

Hi David... Welcome to renntech. The Mk I and Mk II street GT3's are know for a metallic rattle on cold start. I believe there are two kinds of rattle. The first is a "low oil pressure" rattle (for a few seconds at most) and the second is a warm-up rattle (for about a minute depending on temps) due to the secondary air injection into the exhaust that is there to speed the warmup of the catalytic converters. It kind of pops/rattles in the exhaust. The second may be unique to the Mk II and/or US cars. We don't have Mk I's in the US. Yours sounds like the first kind of rattle. On my Mk II, the duration of the first kind of rattle is based on how long it has sat without running leading me to conclude it has to do with oil draining out of a chain tensioner or valve lifters. It's worrying if it is, indeed, only coming from one side of the engine. I suggest you listen to the engine yourself at the back of the car with the lid up while someone else starts it to determine.

Craig, thank you for your reply. I did not mention in my posting that this rattle only occurs 5 out of 10 starts and it does not matter how long the car is standing! When the car starts without the rattle it is sweet. The noise is definitely coming from the right hand side of the engine. The oil leak I mentioned is also coming from that side and this has been investigated by Porsche yesterday, who have told me that it is a copper sealing washer on a bolt that goes through the cam chain tensioner and to rectify this leak would cost 8 hours labour! and off course this is not covered by the extended Porsche warranty! Perhaps the oil that is retained in the tensioner is leaking through this washer! I will investigate further and keep all posted, need some engine diagrams. Does anyone know where to get a workshop manual for this car if there is one available?
