Hi all, Just finished replacing the reverse switch (woo hoo, I have reverse lights)and I noticed a oil build-up in the area in front of the oil sump. I did alot of reading and have figured it to be the RMS, as some of the pics look just like my issue. My Q is this. Is it worth it to replace it? I mean I love a shiney clean engine but, at $800-$1,000 every so many miles I think I can use the 409 on it every now and then. Are there any big negatives known in the neglect of this repair? I of course bought this car recently, and have been taking care of the little odds and ends. But this aint no little odd or end. I like to work on my car and have been known to custom fab some stuff but I do not like to do work only to know I'm gonna have to do it again. Please let me know some of your results or decisions on this matter. Thanks

I am sure most will agree, this is a sum of meny well spent, could mean the life and death of your engine. I did a do it yourself article on it so most people would get the idea. Take a look.

I would clean up the area that has the oil and NOT change the RMS unless it is leaking (not just sweating). If you are not losing oil between changes, it is nothing to worry about. The accumulated oil may not even be from the RMS, but from the cam cover on bank 1.

Thanks for the info. I will keep this in mind depending on how it goes, I have cleaned the area thuroughly and I will monitor it. It was limited to the crossing pipes in front of the oil sump and it looked as though it has been setting up for some time. I just wanted to be sure that there wer no huge known problems from this. So Thanks to you and 1999porsche911. I'l update in a week or so when I check on it for a while. = )
