What's the CAN-bus ?

I can guess it's a sort of communication bus, but what kind of signal, information are send in the bus ?

Is it any plug for connect an external PC such as for the OBD or is it the same plug ?

Is it necessary to have any special modem for reading the values to an external PC (if possible)?

There are three Controller Area Network (CAN) communication busses.

The CAN Drive bus data rate is 500 kBit/s, with comm impossible with a short or open.

The CAN Infotainment and CAN Convenience busses data rate are 100 kBit/s. Comm is possible on a single wire with a short or open.

The Drive and Convenience busses are presented for external connection through the Gateway. The Infotainment is not available externally.

What componets are "talking" through the bus ?

Anyone that have a basic schematic that shows the bus

Different models and model years utilize more or less controllers that talk on the CAN bus. For instance in a MY99 Carrera the CAN bus was only used for communication between the DME and the Tiptronic controllers - but in later model cars with more controllers (and needs for inter-communication) more is done over the CAN bus. For a MY06 Carrera many things that were formerly done with relays or independently are done over the CAN bus (i.e. PSE is controlled on 997 model cars through the CAN bus rather than separate wires and relays).
